Fram Route 66 Nationals

JOLIET, Ill. -
PRO STOCK

Mike Thomas (Pennzoil Pontiac Firebird) This is great excitement for me, the entire crew, and the guys back at the engine shop. This team has really jelled this year. This is the greatest group of people I've ever had together since I started racing in the early 1980s. Everybody gets along great and that's what it takes. Everyone working together has finally paid off. We've been persistent for five or six years in Pro Stock and it couldn't be any sweater. We're just overwhelmed by all of this.

The track has been kind of marginal in the right lane all weekend. We thought we were at a disadvantage slightly, but Rickie Smith (crew chief) is a wizard for figuring out how to setup the car. We had a little too much clutch and it seemed like Warren didn't have enough clutch, he got loose down at the end like we did in Houston, and we were fortunate enough to drive around him. That's not normal to drive around Warren either. I think we have equivalent power as the Johnson stable.

This brand new Jerry Bickel Pennzoil Pontiac Firebird is working great and it was just a matter of this team working together at the right time, all the time. If you're going to beat somebody, you might as well beat the current points leader. I hope he's not there very long because I hope we can keep creeping up on him.

This event here at this great track in Chicago couldn't have been any better.

This Firebird handles great! We've had a couple of problems getting down the track a little bit in the last couple of years, but Jerry Bickel's outdone himself with this car. If it gets loose, you can just move it a little bit and it stabilizes. We haven't had one problem since we jumped in it at the Pennzoil Nationals in Richmond, Va.

Rickie does a great job reading the track and I have complete confidence in him. I never question his ability or judgment. I didn't want to do anything wrong like getting over anxious and red lighting. We had too much clutch and spun the tires at the starting line which hurt our reaction time. To drive around him on the back half of the track was quite an accomplishment. Race Winner

FUNNY CAR

Del Worsham (Checker/Schuck's/Kragens Pontiac Firebird) We didn't get too greedy with our Pontiac Firebird. It wasn't like we were going out there to run a 4.90 or anything. Even though Bazemore ran a 4.96 in the semi finals, we went out there trying to run a 5.03 or so. There was no sense in trying to run a personal best to win. The right lane just didn't want to hold that run.

Hats off to Whit. That was the most consistent car out here today.

We felt good about our effort, we earned our way into the finals with some solid wins, and we didn't get any free passes. Being in the finals is great. It's been a long while for us, but once you get there, all you think about is winning. Next time, we want those red Winston hats the winners get. Lost in the final round
