DARLINGTON, S.C. -
Momma said there would be days like this; however, after a phenomenal 1997
season, Pro Modified racer Quain Stott didn't expect to have one like this
anytime soon. The veteran Pro Modified racer failed to coax an impressive run
out of his Bug Eater-sponsored Corvette that would have secured him a place in
the field. When you consider that rain shortened qualifying to just two
sessions, it was bound to strike the idea that this wasn't going to be a good
weekend. Stott was upbeat albeit frustrated.
"I couldn't tell anyone with a straight face that I wasn't
frustrated," explained Stott. "It just seemed like the harder we
tried, the worse things got. We aren't making any excuses. This is just how
racing is. One day you can be a hero and the next..well....it goes from hero
to zero real fast. The bad part about it is...you can't do a thing about
it."
Stott's woes began on Friday when he damaged an intake while doing the routine
pre-run warm-ups. A mad thrash ensued affording just enough time for Stott to
make it to the rear of the Pro Modified staging lanes. His Friday run netted a
tire-shaking, 6.824/207.08 which was considerably off the 6.738 bubble.
Saturday offered no reprieve as he shook the tires again and was forced to
lift. Stott never gained another chance to improve as an isolated thunderstorm
on Saturday washed out the evening session.
