Father-Son duo brings nitro-burning Funny Cars to Sonoma drag strip this weekend
• Chad and Hunter Green, the father-son Funny Car pair from Midland, Texas, are ready for the 330-mile-per-hour action this weekend in the popular DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals • The Greens, the only father-son combo in the NHRA nitro ranks, bring their 12,000-horsepower monsters to Sonoma in search of another 2026 winner's circle celebration • Chad Green has already captured two NHRA national events this year with his CGM Bond-Coat/bproauto Ford Mustang with wins at the Gatornationals and Route 66 Nationals • But, in their last matchup in May at the Southern Nationals, it was Hunter taking the win in the quarterfinals with his Bond-Coat Dodge//SRT Hellcat machine over his father SONOMA, Calif. - Driving a 330-mile per hour Funny Car isn't usually a family affair, but, for Chad and Hunter Green of Midland, Texas, it is their weekend activity. The Greens, the only father-son pair in the tough NHRA nitro drag racing classes, work during the week in their family oil industry business and then drive 12,000-horsepower drag racing machines on the weekend in the highly competitive NHRA Mission Drag Racing Series which comes to Sonoma Raceway this weekend (July 17-19) in the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
Meanwhile, son Hunter, a former U.S. Nationals Top Alcohol Dragster champion, is now in his second year in the pro ranks, handling his potent CGM Bond-Coat Dodge//SRT Hellcat in selected national races across the nation. And Hunter already defeated his dad in their last matchup at the Southern Nationals in May when the younger Green advanced to the semifinals in the 16-car field. Now, both are ready for the qualifying rounds this Friday (July 17) at Sonoma Raceway set for 5:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. PDT. C. Green is fighting for the coveted NHRA Mission Funny Car world championship this year, while H. Green shares his ride with veteran driver Blake Alexander. "I haven't been in the race car for a few months, but I'm anxious to get back in the action at Sonoma," said H. Green. "We had a testing session back at Norwalk (Ohio) and we learned a few things for this weekend's races. We want to have some consistent runs for qualifying and then be ready for Sunday's eliminations. I might have to race my dad again." For the older Green, Chad is set to record another NHRA national event win with his Ford Mustang as he continues his quest for his first NHRA Mission Funny Car world title. "We want to be a little more consistent at this time of the season," said C. Green. "We have been strong in the winning races, but I'd like to see us get past the first and second round of competition on a regular basis. After a recent test, I think we learned some things that will help us at Sonoma. I'm pleased we could put Hunter back in the car this weekend too.
Despite the loss to his son at the Southern Nationals, the dad was still smiling at the post-race interview for Fox Sports. "I was right there with him, and I thought our car was quick enough to win," said C. Green. "But when we smoked the tires, I saw him drive away. And I had a big smile on my face. He has worked hard to drive these cars, and I am proud of him. Of course, I wanted to win and get to the next round. But, if I can't win the race, I'm happy for Hunter to take it." Chad and Hunter Green will be in action this weekend at Sonoma Raceway with nitro qualifying at the DENSO Sonoma Nationals scheduled Friday (July 17) at 5:30 p.m. and 8:10 p.m. PDT. Saturday's (July 18) qualifying will take place at 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. PDT, with final eliminations on Sunday (July 19) at 11 a.m. PDT. Fox Sports 1 will telecast Sunday's eliminations at 10 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. PDT.
