Richie Crampton is the defending event champion. Five TF drivers have won Indy in back-to-back years. Steve Torrence won the Top Alcohol Dragster title here in 2005. He has been runner-up in Top Fuel in each of the last two seasons. This is a re-match of last year's final round. They are 3-3 in prior events, Torrence with a 2-1 edge in round one.

Crampton had a nice holeshot, then Torrence started smoking the tires about 200 feet down the track. He pedaled, spun again, the car leaking some fluid under the tires. Meanwhile, Crampton trucked on down there until he had a supercharger explosion at about 800 feet. By then he had a big lead and momentum, easily coasting home with the win light.

Steve Torrence was charged with an oildown, #2 for the season and the event. That will cost 10 points and $2K.

Crampton will race Lucas in round two, Lucas has lane choice.
