INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2013 North Central Division champions were crowned at the 47th annual "Land of the Winners" Awards Banquet held Saturday night in the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center. Regional and divisional Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Summit Racing Series, JEGS NHRA Super Quick and Summit Jr. Drag Racing League champions were all honored along with a number of special award winners.
Todd and Earl Datweiler of T&E Auto Haulers were named Person of the Year by Division Director Jay Hullinger to close out the evening's awards ceremony. "T&E Auto Haulers based in Herscher, Ill. have provided the Division with a support trailer since 1984," stated Hullinger. "This past season T&E furnished the Division with a custom built all-aluminum trailer for transportation of the growing inventory of support equipment, a technical work area, racer registration and guest services. The Datweilers embody the division's creed - Land of the Winners."
Andy Bohl from Racine, Wis. collected the Lucas Oil Regional honors for Top Alcohol Funny Car having scored regional event wins in all three of his final round appearances. Bohl's Hedman Hedders Husler Mustang was showcased at the banquet.
The Sportsman Driver of the Year award was won by Marco Abruzzi, who captured the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster championship and finished third in the Brodix/Steve Schmidt Competition Engines Top Sportsman Series. This past summer Abruzzi collected two national event wins and three divisional wins in back to back to back weekends.
JEGS NHRA Super Quick Champion James Shown was honored with a chrome Wally as part of the silver anniversary celebration for the series. Shown was also voted the ET Bracket Driver of the Year in the North Central Division. Super Quick Series announcer Chuck Scrimpsher who announced his retirement this past season was recognized by Hullinger for his dedication and support of the series.
Other special award winners included Skillman Racing, consisting of Wesley Wells, Tomi Lane, Joey Gwin & Monte Anderson was named Sportsman Mechanic of the Year. Two Ohio tracks were honored with Bill Bader, Jr. accepting the Lucas Oil Series Track of the Year for his Summit Motorsports Park and William Tharp accepted for the revamped Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia recipient of the Summit Racing Series Track of the Year. Coles County Dragway, USA was recognized as the National DRAGSTER Be A Winner - Be A Member winner and Pam Lobb from Crossroads Dragway received the publication's Contributor of the Year award.
The NHRA National Class Performers Award for Super Stock stick was presented by NHRA Contingency Program Director Charlie Neilson to Gary Summers.
