MOHNTON, Pa. - Under a beautiful autumn sun, over a hundred cars made their way to Maple Grove Raceway on Sunday for the annual Universal Technical Institute Funday Sunday.
It's a race in which all participants win a trophy, with each class winner getting the opportunity to stuff a 6-foot award into his car for the ride home. There was an open class for all racers in cars 10 seconds or slower, along with another for UTI students and instructors, and another for motorcycles and sleds.
Winning the open class was Shane Sweigart (Robesonia, Pa.) and his 1971 Demon, who survived a seven-round race. He beat Robert Blouch (Myerstown, Pa.) in the final with a pass of 10.420 seconds at 121.80 that was .027 over his dial-in.
Blouch and his '71 Challenger was .017 over, but was .058 slower in his reaction time. Rob Snyder (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was a semifinalist.
Parke Hess (Conestoga, Pa.) won the UTI race in a '70 Chevelle. He had an easy time of it in the final as runner-up Carter Dumps (Stowe, Pa.) fouled at the start. Tracy Wingler (Quarryville, Pa.) was in the semifinals.
In Top Bike, Jeffrey Burnley (Palm, Pa.) won in a Firecat sled. He had a great final run, going 11.585 at 98.38 that was .205 over. Runner-up Bob Bechtel (Reading, Pa.) had a slower RT and was ..266 over.
Maple Grove will be closed this weekend to prepare for the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals that will run Oct. 3-6.
