KENNEDALE, Texas -- It was a classic nitro flopper final round under the lights Saturday, April 27, at Texas Raceway, Kennedale, Texas. Nitro Funny Car racer John Hale driving his Mike Burkhart tribute 1969 Camaro faced Ronny Young in his Raymond Beadle "Blue Max" tribute Plymouth Arrow in an all-Texas final round of the Mickey Thompson Tires DragRacingOnline.com AA/FC Challenge presented by Comp Cams.
It was the first time the Midwest series, now in its fifth year, had competed at the historic track near Ft. Worth and at the eighth-mile distance.
Defending Series Champion Hale ran a stellar 3.746 at 200.50 mph to defeat Young, who ran a respectable 3.940/191.10 in the final.
Hale had an outstanding race. His Guy Tipton-tuned '69 Camaro set Top Speed and Low ET of the event on race winning lap.
Hale's team not only won the race but also set the DRO series records for 1/8th mile ET and speed at 3.818 and 196.07 mph. Both Hale and Young ran over 200 mph in the eighth but were unable to back up that speed.
Hale was on Mickey Thompson tires and Young was racing on Goodyears.
Hale got every point he could out of the event other than Low ET in qualifying. That honor went to Minnesota racer Brian Stewart and his "Bear Town Shaker" '76 Mustang with a 3.888. His car was tuned by Jim Stanke.
The remainder of the 2013 events will be contested on the quarter mile. The next event for the Mickey Thompson Tire DragRacingOnline.com AA/FC Challenge is July 19-20 at Cedar Falls Raceway in Iowa.
