MOHNTON, Pa. - Brandon Witmeyer and his 1985 Olds 442 left Maple Grove Raceway Sunday afternoon with two championships.
Not only did the student at York Tech win the Universal Technical Institute High School Challenge individual championship, he also brought the team championship to his school.
Several dozen racers were on hand Sunday for the annual event that featured races in three classes, including UTI students and faculty and a bracket class for alumni.
In the High School final, Witmeyer (Thomasville, Pa.) beat Jeremy Bartman (Douglassville, Pa.), who was representing Daniel Boone. Witmeyer went 12.229 seconds at 108.56 mph that was .03 over his dial-in. Bartman's pass was 17.341 at 75.99, which was .06 over.
In the semifinals, Bartman advanced by beating Erica Grater (Perkiomenville), who represented Perkiomen Valley, and Witmeyer had a bye to the final.
Shane Zell (Delta, Pa.) was the winner of the UTI Class. He defeated Nick Contos (Conshohocken, Pa.) in the final with a pass or 15.870 at 83.49 in his '02 Ford Focus.
Max Styer (Denver, Pa.) won the Alumni race with a winning pass of 12.293 at 106.73.
This weekend, local racers will be back for the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail, which will race on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be a feature each day with NHRA King of the Track on Saturday and the Boninfante Friction B1 Index Series on Sunday.
Auto Locator Grudge Racing will begin its season on Friday.
