CONCORD, N.C. --
Oliver, of Jefferson, S.C., took his 1973 Chevy Nova to victory lane, claiming the win in the Pro Street class. He covered the quarter-mile in a time of 11.525 seconds at 109.41 mph before moving on to face-off against other class winners to claim the title, King of the Track.
"It means everything to me," Oliver said post race, "you put so much time and effort into it and the competition is so tough. It just means everything."
Oliver looks forward to turning this win into an opportunity for greater success in the future. Picking up a sponsor to race full-time is a goal he hopes to achieve one day soon.
"I'd like to run more NHRA and IHRA pro-am type stuff and focus on going to Atlanta in October and try to add to this and maybe become the world champion," Oliver said.
Oliver had stiff competition for King of the Track from other class winners including, Floyd Edick. The South Carolina native covered the quarter-mile in 7.630 seconds at 172.67 mph to take home the Super Pro trophy.
Randleman, N.C., resident, Scott Macy drove his 1967 Dodge down the eighth-mile in 6.529 seconds at 94.89 mph. to score the victory in the Top Eliminator class.
The Sportsman Wally went to Jonathan Surratt in his 1969 Chevy Malibu with a time of 6.456 seconds at 105.37 mph. on the eighth-mile. Surratt, a Charlotte N.C. resident, is a former member of the Speedway Motorsports Inc. family having, recently retired from Town and Country Ford.
Each race winner claimed a Wally trophy to commemorate their victory, a $1,200 cash prize and a berth to NHRA bracket finals later this year. The trophy is similar to the one given to NHRA national event winners.
Two classes of Jr. Dragsters also competed on Saturday. Winners John Brown, III and Blake Hickman each won a Wally and four tickets to see the stars of the NHRA later this spring.
The pros return to the Bellagio of drag strips April 19-21 for the Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals fueled by Full Throttle, featuring four-wide racing all weekend long by the fastest accelerating machines on the planet.
