Special awards from the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
K&N Filters Horsepower Challenge award ($3,000 to the No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock) -
Allen Johnson, Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, 6.517 seconds, 212.09 mph.
Best Engineered Vehicle - Tom Stockero, 1940 Wilys, Super Gas, Bend, Ore.
NHRA Best Appearing Car - Ron MacKenzie, 1957 Chevrolet Corvette, Super Gas, New
Westminster, B.C.
NHRA Best Appearing Crew - Mike, Bart and Colton Hiatt, A&K Earthmovers, Super Comp and
Super Gas, Fallon, Nev.
Strange Engineering Perfectly Strange Performance Awards ($250 bonus to the first racer in
Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street who wins an elimination round by
running dead-on their dial-in or index) -
Super Stock: No winner
Super Comp: No winner
Stock: Jim Meador, Yorba Linda, Calif.
Super Gas: Justin Lamb, Henderson, Nev.
Super Street: No winner
Full Throttle Hard-Working Crew Award ($3,000 each to Top Fuel and Funny Car and $1,500 to
Pro Stock for the crews that are recognized as the hardest working of the event):
Top Fuel: Doug Kalitta's Technicoat team for their first No. 1 qualifying position in
almost two years and for making it to the semifinal round on Sunday.
Funny Car: Matt Hagan's Aaron's team for tunring their car around and making it a player in
the battle for the Countdown.
Pro Stock: Allen Johnson's Mopar team for being able to change their tuneup from mile-high
to back here at sea level without a hitch with their fifth No. 1 qualifier and final round.
Pro Stock Motorcycle: Karen Stoffer ran a 6.827 in the opening round of eliminations which
is one of the quickest passes in history for Suzuki, giving Suzuki hope.
