In the “announcements to come” department….look for Steve Hamilton and John Mitchell to make it official next week that they will team up for the 2004 season. They currently plan to run the entire IHRA Hooters tour and will make about half a dozen appearances on the NHRA tour, too. The 40 year old Hamilton will bring sponsorship money from a major corporation that will prove to be a major boost to the sport of drag racing. With all of the talk recently about NASCAR trying to reach out to a more diverse fan base (and sponsor base), from what I’ve heard the funding for the Hamilton-Mitchell team will come from the diversity department of the sponsoring corporation. (See Quaker State’s announcement about their tie-in with the Pedregon Brothers to see how this works and why it will work for everyone). The announcements will probably come in two parts, with the team announcement within the next two weeks and the sponsorship program after the first of the year. Good luck to both, the veteran car owner, John Mitchell, and Steve Hamilton.
Also, in a quick update from the Pro Stock test session in Florida…while the actual numbers that the cars are running aren’t that important (especially when there are only three teams there right now), one of the things that Pro Stock fans should watch is in the tire department, not the bead lock part, but the name on the side of the tire. While Goodyear has had a hammerlock on the class for years, at least one (#1) team is testing on new Hoosier tires. Could be interesting and we’ll keep our eye on it for you. Now back to your regularly scheduled program….
