21-year-old Australian drag racing sensation Andrew Cowin is stunned, honoured and proud to have been awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir William Deane, and the Prime Minister, Mr. John Howard.

The Australian Sports Medal was instituted in 2000 to commemorate Australian sporting achievement, recognising the contributions of both current and former sporting participants and for those who have provided services to sport.

Andrew competes in his 6,000 horsepower, 520 km/h K&N Filters/Auto Meter Top Fuel dragster on the professional National Hot Rod Association tour in the United States. Only two other current Australian drag racers, Top Fuel racer Jim Read and Top Doorslammer driver Victor Bray, received the award.

"This year has been so special for Australia with the Sydney Olympic Games being broadcast around the globe, showing our beautiful country to the rest of the world," Andrew said on receiving the award.

"To not be at home and in the US racing while the Olympic Games was on was hard, but to know that what myself and my team have tried to achieve by racing against the worldıs best in the US has been recognised is extremely special. I am deeply honoured to receive the award."

The Australian Sports Medal caps a great year for Andrew and his Cowin Family Racing team, the team recording their fastest ever speeds while also moving to a career high 16th in the professional NHRA points standings.

Andrew was also named Australian Drag Racer of the Year at the Australian MotorSport Awards in March, along with also being nominated as a finalist in the Young Achiever, International Achiever and MotorSport Person of the Year awards.
