LAS VEGAS -- The goal of Doug Herbert and co-crew chief/tuner Johnny West is to have the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster run competitive elapsed times, and West believes he's getting closer to the combination that will produce the wanted results. But it didn't happen at the Summitracing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The traction trouble that plagued the team in the first three NHRA events continued over the weekend, culminating in a first-round loss to Melanie Troxel on Sunday. Herbert's best run of the weekend came on his first trip down the track, 4.798 seconds at 307.51 mph, and it was good enough for 10th starting position. Troxel had some traction trouble in the first round too, but her car's tires caught hold before Herbert's and she won with a 5.730 at 167.43 mph to Herbert's 5.964 at 147.13. "We're so close to finding the right combination," said West. "We've had some very good 60-foot and 330-foot times and we're on the right track," added Herbert. "We'll keep on trying when we get to Houston Friday." The O'Reilly Springnationals are scheduled Friday through Sunday at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. Pro Winners: Larry Dixon, Top Fuel; Gary Densham, Funny Car; Ron Krisher, Pro Stock.
