With Emphasis on Safety, Cost, Fans and Television

NORWALK, Ohio -- IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) President Bill Bader has announced year 2000 Top Fuel rules and specifications designed to improve the on and off track quality of professional drag racing.

"Our goals are to make the cars safer. We must stop blowing up engines and sending debris into the stands," stated Bader. " We must make the cars affordable to run and maintain. Finally, we must provide side by side racing for the fans and provide the best show possible for television."

In 2000, Nitromethane will be reduced to 90% with Blower overdrive reduced to 25% max. Additional rule changes for 2001 regarding fuel volume reduction and compression ratio are also being considered, pending final test results," added Bader.

Beginning at the Holley Spring Nationals in April (The Winter Nationals at Darlington will be a "grace race"), a Black Flag rule will be enforced during Top Fuel qualifying and eliminations. Any car causing an interruption during qualifying will lose 15 points and the run will not count. During eliminations, one offense (per event) will bring a $500 penalty and a loss of 15 points. A second offense (per event) will bring a $1000 penalty and a loss of 25 points; a third offense (per event) brings a $2500 penalty and a loss of 50 points.

IHRA will also institute a bonus points system with 5 points awarded for each "clean" pass in qualifying and eliminations. Starting at the Spring Nationals, a record will be maintained of all Top Fuel teams and the number of times a Black Flag penalty is imposed on each team. At the end of the year, the team with the "cleanest" average record will receive all of the penalty fine money assessed during the year. To be eligible, a team must have entered all 10 Top Fuel races in 2000.

"If any of the rules need to be beefed up we will do so. We will make Top Fuel racing safe, affordable and entertaining. IHRA has the opportunity to make a difference and we're going for it," added Bader.
