Y2K TV Package Details Emerge
By Ed Dykes, FastNews Network

But Still No Official Word From Glendora

MARIETTA, Ga. -- While the official announcement from NHRA is still forthcoming, the details regarding the organization's 2000 television package are starting to solidify.

In a press release dated today (12/9/99), The Nashville Network has confirmed plans to provide "live and same day" television coverage of eight NHRA national events in 2000, including the inaugural event from Las Vegas and the 46th annual U.S. Nationals from Indianapolis, Ind..

“TNN is pleased to continue our relationship with the NHRA,” said TNN President David Hall. “TNN has telecast NHRA Drag Racing for 16 years and one of the things we have learned is that the same-day telecast format is the best way to showcase the great sport of drag racing.”

The release indicates the broadcasts "will feature comprehensive coverage of Sunday’s elimination and final round competition for Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock divisions," apparently leaving fans of the remaining professional and sportsman categories in the dark. TV industry insiders have long complained that one of the problems with drag racing is the fact that there are so many 'winners' at the conclusion of the event.

The TNN broadcasts will feature veteran announcers Eli Gold, Steve Evans, and Bob Frey.

TNN viewers will be able to follow the action in 2000 from the NHRA events at Las Vegas, Nev., Houston, Texas, Richmond, Va., Atlanta, Ga., Dallas, Texas, Brainerd, Minn., Topeka, Kan., and Indianapolis. That leaves the remaining races to ESPN2, given's NHRA's statement that their entire schedule will be confined to those two outlets in 2000.

There was no mention in the TNN release of the magazine-style event preview show promised by NHRA, leaving us to conclude that it will be a ESPN2 property as well. Unless, of course, you can believe the rumors that the shows will be on Speedvision, which makes absolutely no sense. But who ever said any of this has to make sense??

Stay tuned.
