POMONA, Calif. -- Underscoring the diversity that is prevalent in Import drag racing, the National Hot Rod Association/Import Drag Racing Circuit-sanctioned CSK International Finals presented by Bosch put three different automobile manufacturers into the Pomona Raceway winners circle Sunday.

Russ Matusevich of Northridge, Calif., and Dave Jusko of Reading, Pa., scored victories in the Quick 16 and Street 8 categories, respectively, for Toyota. Huntington Beach, Calif.'s Stephan Papadakis and Mike Escamilla of Cerritos, Calif., were the Honda winners in the Outlaw 8 and All Motor classes. Brighton, England's Wayne Saunders won the headline Pro category in his '99 Ford Focus.

Saunders defeated Bronx, NY's Marcos Acosta's '91 Mazda MX-3 in the final with an 8.56-second run at 160.11 mph to claim his first NHRA major-event title.

"At least the car was consistent," said Saunders. "Consistently bad," he added with a laugh. "I just wish we had been able to run quicker than we did. We know the car can run the numbers and I really would have liked to have put on a better show for the fans. But a win's a win, and I'll take it."

Papadakis was the upset winner in Outlaw 8 when final-round opponent Adam Saruwatari of Arroyo Grande, Calif., broke a turbocharger seal on his '93 Mazda RX-7 just off the starting line. Papadakis eased his '99 Honda Civic to a 9.30-second lap.

The always competitive Quick 16 category delivered an upset winner in Matusevich, who drove his '85 Toyota Supra past Garland, Texas' Kenny Tran and his '93 Honda Civic. Matusevich, who had qualified sixth with a 10.13-second run, ran a career-best 9.99 at 139.21mph in the final to cover Tran's 10.23-second pass, his slowest run of the day.

Final results from the CSK International Finals presented by Bosch at Pomona Raceway, Calif., listing driver, residence, car, elapsed time in seconds, and speed in mph.
