Lagana Runs Career Best in Cayuga

CAYUGA, Ont. -- Bobby Lagana Jr. and the Twilight Zone team continued with their successful season at the 3rd Annual AcDelco Nationals at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario Canada this past weekend. It was a weekend filled with much excitement in the Lagana camp.

After a substantial amount of rain on Friday night and Saturday morning, the IHRA crew worked diligently to get the track prepped for Saturday's afternoon and night sessions. In the late afternoon, Top Fuel's second qualifying round kicked off with Lagana and Chris Karamesines. At the green, the DragRacingGirls.com top fueler left hard and Lagana expertly wheeled the car as it made a hard move to the wall around 900 feet and clicked off a career best et run of 4.820 at 296.57 mph. Overshadowing the run was a scary moment for the Lagana team. As Bobby lifted at the finish line, the rear wing started to collapse unloading the rear tires and causing the left rear tire to shred the center out of it and fly up and hit the wing itself. Luckily, the wing stayed on the car avoiding a major accident. Upon further inspection in the pits, the team found that the stay braces, which hold up the rear of the wing, failed causing the tire to fail. Lagana called on expert welder, Kelly Campbell to make new stay braces for the wing. The entire Lagana team and Campbell worked deep in the night to make the new braces and inspect the entire chassis for any problems while Team Werner loaned their spare wing in preparation for Sunday's eliminations.

Sunday dawned and the DragRacingGirls.com top fueler was ready for first round action against Doug Foley for the second race in a row. Lagana left hard at the hit, but the car pitched a blower belt before half track slowing to a 6.06 at 151.41 mph to Foley's 4.81 at 301.54 mph ending Lagana's weekend.

"We had a really close call with the wing and tire failure on the second qualifying run and got very lucky. I have to thank the Werner guys for coming to the aid and letting us borrow a wing and Kelly Campbell for working so hard to get the stay braces made Saturday night so we could run first round. It's disappointing to go out in the first round, but considering the events of the weekend, we were extremely lucky to be racing in eliminations. " Lagana continued, "I'm very excited about the performance of the car this weekend and both Jay (crew chief, Jay Lewis) and I are looking forward to running in Martin in two weeks. That is the track that we ran our first four and our first 300 mph run, so we have high hopes for the weekend."

Lagana remains in the number five spot in the 2004 Hooters IHRA Points Standings heading into the 23rd Annual Torco Racing Fuels Northern Nationals in Martin, Michigan on August 12th - 14th.
