DINWIDDIE, Va. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the 4th Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented by Trak Auto:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  15 Bob Weickgenannt 5.361 275.81 Q 2 Tim Wilkerson 4.912 305.49
                  0.616 5.909 182.22 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.535 4.937 301.40

11:25 AM We start round one of Funny Car eliminations under cloudy skies. We have a crosswind today, and the temperature is in the high sixties. Wilkerson leaves on Weickgenannt and does not look back as he almost repeats his time from yesterday afternoon.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Cruz Pedregon 4.919 299.30 Q 14 Phil Burkhart 5.231 284.90
                  0.526 (Broke) E1 *****WINNER***** 0.520 9.871 81.61

Burkhart is in only the second race of his career, and the first time he gets to stage the car as he broke on the burnout last weekend. He leaves first, and goes up in smoke, but pedals it. In the other lane Cruz launches real hard and then takes aim at the centerline as the car goes right. He catches the 330 foot cone and this gives Burkhart his first win, as Cruz is disqualified.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  16 Dale Creasy, Jr. 5.433 259.59 Q 1 John Force 4.887 310.66
                  0.544 9.122 81.75 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.489 5.111 262.08

Force leaves on Creasy, and Creasy loses traction before he gets to the 330 foot mark, and aborts the run. Force is motoring right down track until he began hazing the tires from 1000 feet on through the quarter-mile.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  13 Del Worsham 5.131 295.95 Q 4 Chuck Etchells 4.976 306.12
                  0.569 5.189 278.03 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.507 5.078 298.40

They leave together and are side by side until 1000 feet and that is when the Richards power kicks in and moves Etchells into round two. The margin of victory was .107 seconds for Etchells.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  12 Randy Anderson 5.116 264.70 Q 5 Ron Capps 5.025 285.17
 *****WINNER***** 0.446 5.160 276.58 E1 0.510 5.398 265.56

Anderson cuts the light and runs straight and true to send Capps home early for the second time this year. Capps drops a cylinder right off the starting line and pushes the car toward the centerline and Capps does an great job keeping it in his lane. Anderson will give up lane choice to Etchells.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  11 Frank Pedregon 5.092 296.63 Q 6 Al Hofmann 5.026 275.48
                  0.513 5.230 282.22 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.518 5.031 273.47

They leave together and then Hofmann just powers away until 1000 feet and then he drops a cylinder, but he is still second quickest of this round, so far. He will have lane choice over Burkhart.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  10 Dean Skuza 5.089 299.70 Q 7 Whit Bazemore 5.034 306.95
                  0.503 5.358 236.03 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.515 5.159 291.35

Bazemore will be attempting to avenge a round one lost to Skuza in The Gatornationals earlier this year. Bazemore does that, as Skuza leaves first, but the Team Winston car is quicker to every point from there on. Skuza loses traction just past half track, and pedals it. Bazemore will give up lane choice to the quickest Funny Car in round one Tim Wilkerson.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   9 Tony Pedregon 5.088 292.68 Q 8 Gary Densham 5.061 297.71
 *****WINNER***** 0.473 5.073 293.44 E1 0.501 5.099 282.92

Pedregon gets out on Densham and it is a good thing as Densham has quicker incremental times to every point up to the 1000 feet. This was a great drag race as Tony takes the win stripe by .048 seconds, and will have lane choice over the boss Force in round two.
