Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Clif Bakx Runs 5.632/263.87, Now #1

2:22 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 28.83 inches, adjusted altitude 3,112 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

This is Bakx' TAD debut, but he's no "newbie." Check Bob Frey's "Did You Know" column this week for the details.

Bakx made a clean, straight run, right down the groove. There was a loud noise when he shut off at the stripe, couldn't tell from here if it was anything other than a mild backfire.

Left Lane: Jerry Powell Runs 5.863/245.76, Now #2
Right Lane: Dean Dubbin Runs 6.391/143.28, Now #3

Powell's injected car struggled most of the way down the track. Dubbin's blown car left hard, 0.921 for the first 60 feet, but ran out of power about halfway to the other end - clocked at 178 mph at half track.

Left Lane: Mark Taliaferro Runs 8.751/97.41, Now #5
Right Lane: William Litton Runs 5.800/250.41, Now #2

Left Lane: Edwin Schmeeckle No Time, Now #7
Right Lane: Paul Fishburn Runs 24.553/36.37, Now #6

They staged, Fishburn blipped the throttle and rolled the beams, then stopped. Schmeeckle launched on Fishburn's movement, then tried to take it back. His engine died and he rolled to a stop around half track. Meanwhile, Fishburn got back on the throttle brielfy, then rolled down the track.

Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.368/258.96, Now #1
Right Lane: Greg Hunter Runs 5.487/261.88, Now #2

Two good runs.

Alan Bradshaw's incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.420, 660ft-3.554/220.44 mph, 1,000ft-4.528.

Left Lane: Gord Gingles Runs 5.369/269.19, Now #2
Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.490/259.56, Now #4

Clif Bakx is Gingle's car owner. Bakx drives "The Bull," Gingles "The Bull II."

Two clean runs, Gingles going to the #2 spot.

Gord Gingles' incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.451, 660ft-3.581/221.78 mph, 1,000ft-4.540.
Robin Samsel's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.491, 660ft-3.642/216.62 mph, 1,000ft-4.632.

Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.444/264.29, Now #4
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.433/265.27, Now #3

Two more clean runs, the top of the field getting more crowded with each pair.

Marty Thacker's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.434, 660ft-3.596/212.66 mph, 1,000ft-4.594.
Bill Reichert's incremental times: 60ft-0.985 sec., 330ft-2.488, 660ft-3.627/220.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.594.

Left Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 5.447/255.63, Now #6
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.329/271.46, Now #1

Last pair, fifteen TAD cars on the grounds for this weekend. Whiteley's car was visibly quicker over the first 60 feet and he kept lengthening his lead to take over the #1 spot.

Randy Meyer's incremental times: 60ft-0.943 sec., 330ft-2.447, 660ft-3.591/217.14 mph, 1,000ft-4.581.
