Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 53rd annual O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Brittany Force Runs 3.845/293.22, Now #7; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 4.013/222.14, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.800/115.01, Was #17

Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.03 inches, adjusted altitude 2,488 feet, track temperature 97 degrees.

Langdon started to break the tires loose around 330 feet and then the car pitched the blower belt. He improves enough to get in the show on the bubble for now. Force launched hard and was straight down the groove to get in the show. Brittany Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.159, 660ft-3.059/285.11 mph.


Left Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 9.317/81.95, Now #20; Best prior run: 10.403/83.38, Was #20
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.795/326.71, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.584/164.11, Was #17

Chrisman is up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle and clicks it off. Kalitta with a great looking pass to go to the number three spot and has the big top end speed, the fastest pass of the weekend. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.154, 660ft-3.053/284.56 mph.

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.827/318.17, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.160/103.54, Was #19
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.813/324.83, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.488/173.90, Was #17

This was a good side-by-side drag race as both of these guys make full pass to get in the show. Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.840 sec., 330ft-2.140, 660ft-3.062/273.77 mph.
Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.165, 660ft-3.065/282.78 mph.

Left Lane: Steve Faria Runs 4.994/149.08, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.592/120.23, Was #19
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 3.812/308.14, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.045/228.85, Was #18

Faria is dropping cylinders right off the starting line and never got them to clean up. Grubnic with a real nice pass until right before the finish line when car moved out of the groove and the engine let go with a big bang and quick fireball. Grubnic still makes the top half of the show, but there is oil on the track as the Safety Safari is rolling.

Left Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 3.815/321.50, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.037/229.12, Was #18
Right Lane: Leah Pruett Runs 3.865/291.38, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.018/251.86, Was #17

Torrence with a good clean pass to get in the show. Steve Torrence's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.157, 660ft-3.061/280.78 mph. Pruett was on a good pass until the was a pop and on the top end and car slowed. She improves, but just misses to get in the show. Leah Pruett's incremental times: 60ft-0.865 sec., 330ft-2.171, 660ft-3.083/277.03 mph.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 7.388/89.67, Now #17; Best prior run: 3.962/286.32, Was #16
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.848/318.39, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.968/244.74, Was #17

McMillen started to lose traction early and clicked it off. Dixon started mixing up cylinders on the top end, he improved, but not enough to get in the show. Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.839 sec., 330ft-2.159, 660ft-3.084/276.35 mph.

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.768/328.14, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.834/322.19, Was #11
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 4.288/223.02, Now #16; Best prior run: 3.959/270.48, Was #16

Zizzo is dropping cylinders right at the hit and never picks up before he clicks it off. Brown launched hard and was straight down the groove with a real nice pass to go to the number two spot. Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.847 sec., 330ft-2.140, 660ft-3.027/285.59 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.825/324.05, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.814/325.06, Was #9
Right Lane: Sidnei Frigo Runs 3.873/306.60, Now #15; Best prior run: 3.890/298.60, Was #15

Frigo with another good pass, but will not improve...Sidnei Frigo's incremental times: 60ft-0.854 sec., 330ft-2.194, 660ft-3.109/278.46 mph. Lucas slows from his time yesterday, but still has a good looking pass. Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.864 sec., 330ft-2.177, 660ft-3.078/282.66 mph.

Left Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 3.798/326.16, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.802/325.37, Was #6
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.382/179.06, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.799/325.77, Was #5

Millican starts to lose traction just past half track and clicks it off. alBalooshi launched hard and keep it hitting on all eight to improve and move around Millican to the number five spot. Khalid alBalooshi's incremental times: 60ft-0.850 sec., 330ft-2.166, 660ft-3.056/285.35 mph.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 5.351/125.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.761/325.22, Was #1
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.758/328.14, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.777/326.08, Was #3

Bernstein started to smoke the tires right around 330 feet and clicked it off. Schumacher with a great pass to go to the number one spot. Then all the excitement started as the chutes deployed, but they didn't blossom until late and then only one chute fully blossomed. The car goes into the sand and finally gets stopped right before the net...
