Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Southeast Division, Prelude to the Gators at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bill Evans No Time, Now #1

12:07 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 66 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 970 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

Evans made a solo pass to open what is hoped to be the first of three qualifying sessions for the alcohol cars - depending on how well things go this afternoon.

That was disappointing. "The Black Pearl" appeared to be running okay on alcohol, but when the switched over to Nitro-Pop, it went Pop Pop and quit.

Left Lane: Artie Allen Runs 5.482/252.38, Now #1
Right Lane: Wayne Morris Runs 5.753/255.24, Now #2

Allen made a nice run to open his season. Morris took the long route to the finish line, using up a lot of his lane.

Left Lane: Dan Page Runs 5.333/265.69, Now #2
Right Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 5.324/267.53, Now #1

Wow. Allen's run looked solid, straight and smooth. Both these cars were not quite as straight and not solidly in the groove, but they had great incremental times and very good elapsed times.

Dan Page's incremental times: 60ft-0.931 sec., 330ft-2.406, 660ft-3.537/221.71 mph, 1,000ft-4.497.
Richard Bourke's incremental times: 60ft-0.926 sec., 330ft-2.397, 660ft-3.526/220.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.491.

Left Lane: John Finke Runs 5.677/196.99, Now #5
Right Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 5.383/260.01, Now #3

Both cars had puffs of smoke during the run. Meyer's car puffed a bit early in the run, then cleaned up. Finke's car puffed and slowed on the top end.

John Finke's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.488, 660ft-3.613/220.19 mph, 1,000ft-4.625.
Randy Meyer's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.420, 660ft-3.550/219.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.529.

Left Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 15.777/27.08, Now #8
Right Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.351/262.90, Now #3

Last pair. Both had good years in 2012, Mercier second in Division 1 and McPhillips fourth in a very strong national effort.

It looked like Mercier popped the burst panel, the tires squaring off, then the chutes coming out.

Nice pass by McPhillips, third-best of the four five-thirties run in the first session.
