Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 48th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.961/301.54, Now #18; Best prior run: 3.946/301.40, Was #18

4:37 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 59 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 28.91 inches, adjusted altitude 1,587 feet, track temperature 65 degrees.

Terry McMillen is on the bump spot at 3.893.

Buff made a good effort earlier today, came up a little short of the bump. Now conditions are improved, but the track is cooling rapidly and may be a problem before the rounhd is over.

Buff gave it a good shot, the car going straight down the groove, but he came up short once again.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.864/302.01, Now #14; Best prior run: 3.892/312.50, Was #15

Steven Chrisman and Chris Karamesines were schedule to be in the first two pairs of cars, neither made the staging call.

Cory Mac made another good run, improved slightly, moved up one spot.

Left Lane: Mike Salinas Runs 3.832/309.63, Now #14; Best prior run: 3.866/307.16, Was #15
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 8.672/83.01, Now #17; Best prior run: 3.893/281.25, Was #17

Salinas has done well here so far, with career-best numbers. Zizzo has been close, but lost the 16th spot to McMillen on speed.

Zizzo was up in smoke immediately and his weekend and season are over. Salinas made another good run, with another career-best ET, but there was a hard BANG from the engine bay when he listed at the stripe. He did move up one spot.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 7.123/65.46, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.808/321.19, Was #13
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 3.861/316.23, Now #15; Best prior run: 3.893/308.35, Was #16

Todd lost traction early in the run. McMillen made hius best run of the weekend, moved up one spot. Now Cory McClenathan is on the bump spot at 3.864 - but he's in no danger, the remaining cars are already in the field.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.775/325.69, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.807/307.44, Was #12
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.797/324.28, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.802/323.50, Was #9

Schumacher hoped to eat into Antron Brown's points lead during qualifying, but so far he's lost ground, not gained, and Vandergriff has failed to come up to the pace he's been running lately.

That had to bring a smile to both teams - Schumacher all the way up to third and Vandergriff moving around Brown on speed on a pair of seventies to move into the top half.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 7.405/89.48, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.805/326.08, Was #12
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.751/328.14, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.799/322.19, Was #10

Kalitta lost traction early in the run. Bernstein came back to form with a nice run, taking over the #1 spot with top speed of the meet.

Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.840 sec., 330ft-2.132, 660ft-3.014/287.78 mph.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.892/276.75, Now #11; Best prior run: 3.804/320.66, Was #11
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.842/269.78, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.797/322.58, Was #10

Brown's engine erupted in a big fireball just before the stripe, a bad ending for what started out to be a pretty good run. He also oiled the track, but he had a freebie coming. Millican also had top-end engine problems and he also oiled the lane. He did not have a free one coming and it was his second of the event.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.833 sec., 330ft-2.135, 660ft-3.031/279.96 mph.

Left Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 7.222/77.78, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.795/323.89, Was #8
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 8.908/73.81, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.791/325.69, Was #7

If Massey does not move to a different position on the ladder, he will face Brown in the opening round of eliminations. Right now, Massey and Schumacher are tied - Massey earned bonus points and Schumacher had an oildown penalty.

Both cars lost traction almost immediately and the first-round matchup between Massey and Brown is locked in. Torrence will face Vandergriff.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 5.232/126.61, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.787/322.27, Was #6
Right Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 8.801/68.27, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.781/324.20, Was #5

Grubnic got farther than alBalooshi, but both lost traction.

Grubnic will face Millican and alBalooshi will take on Kalitta in round one.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.730/327.82, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.768/324.90, Was #3
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 7.174/96.53, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.761/324.98, Was #2

The final two. Lucas lost traction early in the run, but Langdon kept the tires stuck and took the top spot away from Bernstein.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.833 sec., 330ft-2.113, 660ft-2.993/288.46 mph.

That sets the rest of the first round pairs: Langdon races Cory Mac, Bernstein races McMillen, Lucas faces Salinas, and Schumacher meets J.R. Todd.
