LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Nitro Harley at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, Short Line Express Gambler Shootout at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Steve Dorn Runs 6.493/215.62, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.557/213.70, Was #2
Right Lane: Tommy Grimes Runs 6.323/219.72, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.324/220.55, Was #1
6:57 p.m. This is cool - it's dark enough that header flames are very visible, leaving no doubt when they are at full throttle.
Steve Heidner is on the bump spot at 10.615.
These two were in the throttle all the way through, Dorn improving slightly, Grimes improving a thousandth, and they remain #1 and #2.
Left Lane: Andy Beauchemin Runs 7.181/225.11, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.142/187.23, Was #4
Right Lane: Steve Ruggiero Runs 7.252/164.73, Now #5; Best prior run: 8.273/114.65, Was #5
Both riders in this pair lost a lot of ground to the first pair in the first half of their run. Beauchamin really picked up the pace on the top end, while Ruggiero shut off early.
Left Lane: Damian Cownden Runs 6.291/208.14, Now #1; Best prior run: 13.941/78.69, Was #10
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 7.113/144.83, Now #5; Best prior run: 8.561/108.57, Was #6
These two were gunning for the top spots after making off-pace runs in the first session.
This was a good race to half track, then Turner's header flames got hard to see while Cownden's stayed strong all the way through and he took over the top spot.
Damian Cownden's incremental times: 60ft-1.101 sec., 330ft-2.779, 660ft-4.129/186.28 mph, 1,000ft-5.257.
Left Lane: Ron Gledhill Runs 6.804/202.70, Now #4; Best prior run: 8.797/106.53, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Heidner Runs 7.694/186.85, Now #9; Best prior run: 10.615/87.48, Was #9
Gledhill was on the bump spot when he staged, Heidner needed to beat his 8.79 to get in.
Gledhill made a nice run to move well away from the bump spot, but Heidner's run was not good enough to get in with the bump spot now Steve Ruggiero's 7.252.
Left Lane: Kevin Boyer Runs 8.442/182.30, Now #10; Best prior run: 13.270/82.62, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Ruggiero No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.965/200.77, Was #5
Ruggerio had an impressive engine backfire as soon as he launched. Boyer lost a lot of time early in his run and he coasted across the stripe.
Right Lane: Toni Froehling Runs 14.158/54.50, Now #11; No Prior Run
Froehling lost traction immediately and coasted through.
