BAYTOWN, Texas - Clark Smiley and Joey Tanksley lead the list of winner's Saturday night at Royal Purple Raceway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Texas Sportsman Shootout. With unfavorable weather looking to move in on Sunday, officials made the decision to finish the race on Saturday night.
Smiley, Denver City, Texas, drove his '09 GXP Comp Eliminator entry to the win at 168.03 mph in 7.406 seconds over Chase Williams, also in a '09 GXP out of Carthage, Texas. Tanksley, Baton Rouge, La., beat Brett Candies in a '10 Mustang in Super Stock. Tanksley ran 9.942 seconds at 127.57 mph in his '66 Chevy II.
Brett's brother P.B. Candies closed the deal in Stock Eliminator over David Buckner. Brett, Des Allemands, La., went 9.421 seconds at 149 mph in his '13 Mustang to Buckner's 9.772, 131.64.
Jeff Lopez had a great day going until he meet up with Archie Fruge and Tommy Phillips in the Finals. Fruge, Lake Charles, La., outran the Bedford, Texas, racer in Super Comp posting a lap of 8.905 at 167.12. Then Phillips, Forney, Texas, put Lopez on the trailer in Super Gas on a double breakout, 9.894 to a 9.893.
Lee Lightfoot outran former division champion Keith Raftery for the Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster trophy and Joseph Mohana knocked out Stewart Johnson in the Suburban Chevrolet Top Sportsman class. Lightfoot, Odessa, Texas, covered the quartermile in 6.373 seconds at 218.58 mph to Raftery, Lake Charles, La., at 6.474, 204.98. Mohana, Bourg, La., went 6.809 at 204.08 in his '70 Camaro to Johnson's '90 Beretta at 7.528, 187.34.
Larry Carter and Robert Sanders rounded out the winners for the Texas Sportsman Shootout as Carter took out Rick Huffman in Super Street and Sanders won in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson. Carter won in his '64 Nova while Sanders, Katy, Texas, was on a '04 Kawasaki to win over Mike Hudson, Broken Arrow, Okla.
This was the final event in the NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series however racers can travel outside their division and continue to earn points toward national, regional and divisional championships.
