EDMONTON, Alb. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 2005 Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third Annual Western RV Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by TORCO Race Fuels listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Scott Murry No Time, Now #2
Right Lane: Ed Verenka Runs 15.853/74.58, Now #1
9:34 p.m. We open Top Fuel with a pair of A-Fuel cars, Murry in Doug Doucette's car and Verenka from just down the road in Calgary.
Murry shut off after the burnout. Verenka hit
the throttle and boiled the hides, the car barely moving.
Left Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 5.016/292.77, Now #1
Right Lane: Rick Cooper Runs 5.237/230.96, Now #2
Cooper's header flames went out just past the 1,000-foot marker. Ostrander appeared to keep the candles lit all the way to the line.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.879/290.19, Now #2
Right Lane: Louie Allison Runs 4.828/282.19, Now #1
Allison's car made a hard move toward the wall as it neared the finish line and he had to lift a bit early. Litton had the header flames up all the way to the line.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 5.086/203.40, Now #5
Right Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.702/286.44, Now #1
Last pair. Millican had to pedal several times on the top end to keep the front end from getting way up in the air and Foley ran away from him to take the top spot for tonight, anyway.
Left Lane: Todd Paton Runs 4.703/314.39, Now #2
Paton got to run last, not because he's Canadian, but because he's been having problems with his tuneup. He not only made a great run, with no sign of the kinds of problems that have plagued him this year, but he came within a thousandth of knocking Foley off the top of the ladder. Nice job, maybe that team is finally making a turnaround.
