Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GRAND BEND, Ont. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 2005 Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Sixth annual Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bob Leverich Runs 8.121/127.49, Now #2
Right Lane: Todd Paton Runs 7.191/105.62, Now #1

8:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 64 percent, barometer 29.33 inches, adjusted altitude 2,604 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

Leverich is the A-Fuel car we've seen in IHRA Top Fuel competition this year. Of course, he lives about 40 miles from the track...Leverich launched and then the engine went silent. Paton's run was not silent, starting okay, ending in a huge fireball about 200 feet off the starting line. And he oiled the track.

Left Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 5.583/182.85, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 7.769/94.93, Now #3

8:58 p.m. Okay, let's try again. This was Ostrander's first run of the 2005 season. He lost traction about 400 feet out, "The Greek" did the same about 700 feet down the track. Ostrander pulled both chutes at the finish line and stopped way short of the end of the track, hopping out and into a golf cart to get back for Louie Allison's run.

Left Lane: John Sipple Runs 5.234/234.74, Now #1

This was Sipple's first run since having heart problems at Rockingham last year. He made a nice, smooth pass to about 1,000 feet, then shut it off.

Left Lane: C.J. Nelson Runs 5.616/238.64, Now #3
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 5.680/166.39, Now #4

Nelson pedaled early in the run, then kept the candles lit the rest of the way. Athey was quicker to half track, then his header flames went out around the 1,000-foot marker.

Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 5.457/186.82, Now #2
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.926/154.46, Now #6

Somebody will be bumped when these two finish their runs. Both shut off around half track, spinning the tires. Jack Ostrander is on the bump spot at 7.769.

Left Lane: Rick Cooper Runs 5.243/252.52, Now #2
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 9.008/90.36, Now #11

Cooper managed an ugly run, in and out of the throttle several times, the header flames dark orange. Litton's flames looked much better, but his tire smoke did not. Todd Paton is on the bump spot at 7.191.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.779/282.42, Now #2
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.748/288.03, Now #1

Both drivers shut off a bit before the finish line, but both made strong, smooth runs to that point. Paul Athey is on the bump spot at 5.680.
