Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

GRAND BEND, Ont. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the 2005 Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Sixth annual Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.570/175.78, Now #2
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.228/227.23, Now #1

7:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.32 inches, adjusted altitude 2,668 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

The rainbow is now more than half an arc, centered right over the end of the track, and it's getting bigger - which means the precipitation is getting closer. It's a pretty sight, but not exactly encouraging.

Lancaster's car went to the left on the launch and he brought it back, then popped the supercharger at about 1,000 feet, the hatch in the hood sailing high in the air. McMillen's car fought for traction early in the run, with a very sedate 1.041 60-foot time.

Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.844/238.98, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim Sickles Runs 5.952/230.21, Now #2

These two made their burnouts and were preparing to stage when word came from the top end that it was "misting" down there. The good news is, the rainbow appears to be fading. 7:46 p.m. and we're on hold.

7:52 p.m. Track's dry and here we go again. Both cars were a bit loose early in the run and both veteran drivers handled it well, never lifting.

Left Lane: John Evanchuk Runs 6.460/205.19, Now #4
Right Lane: Trevor Lebsack Runs 13.681/57.32, Now #6

Both Alberta drivers had hard, early tire shake. Lebsack lifted, but Evanchuk, in the Atchison team car, pedaled once, got the wheels way up, pedaled again, and almost clipped the finish line reflectors on a very busy run.

Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 12.577/66.18, Now #7
Right Lane: Thomas Carter Runs 9.764/87.18, Now #6

Both cars shook hard, Noakes smoking the tires like a fuel car.

Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 5.969/232.87, Now #4
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.944/237.13, Now #2

Two nice runs, clean and straight.

Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 11.024/71.10, Now #9
Right Lane: Jean-Guy Genest No Time, Now #12

Jean-Guy's engine went silent after the burnout. Munroe left hard, posting a 0.972 short time, then went into tire shake and lifted.

Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.944/236.80, Now #3

Thomas' car took a bit of a crooked path to the finish line and started trailing light smoke from the left-hand headers from half track on, losing second spot to Foster on speed.
