Officials Estimate 5:30 p..m. Resumption
By Larry Sullivan

Pro/Am To Lose One Round

GRAND BEND, Ont. - 5 p.m. - A whole bunch of folks deserve a pat on the back for working hard in horrible conditions to get the race track in shape to resume racing here at the Grand Bend Motorplex.

In addition to the track cuts to relieve the water pressure, the workers scraped the excess rubber from both lanes from 330 feet, where the "weeper" problem started, to just past half track because the water coming up from underneath loosened the rubber, making the traction very unpredictable in that area of the track.

In addition to the regular IHRA and Grand Bend track crews, members of several race teams volunteered to help get the track in shape. Most visible were those from Clay Millican's Werner Top Fuel Team, Mike Janis' Eaton Pro Modified Team, and Terry McMillen's Amalie Oil Funny Car Team, but members of several other teams also joined the work party. There was no official tally of participants, but it was the IHRA "family" at work once again.

The estimated timeline for the rest of today is to resume Pro/Am qualifying at 5:30, with the ET Bracket cars and motorcycles, followed by Top Sportsman and Quick Rod, finishing the round of qualifying that began at 10 a.m. today.

The Friday "Night of Fire" qualifying session for professional competitors is still slated for 7:30 tonight. Best of all, the radar screen is clear right now, so there's a good chance we'll get that in.

It appears that the Pro/Am racers will lose one qualifying session because of the seepage problem, with one more qualifying session still scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
