Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 40th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.815/203.22, Now #1

2:40 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 68 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 1,452 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

The two Fords come out in the first two pairs since they have not accumulated many points this year. Panella posted a 1.009 60-foot time on a good-looking run - but we'll have to wait a while to see just how good it really was.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.873/203.22, Now #3
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.820/202.85, Now #2

Geoffrion's car picked the wheels up and turned right on the launch. He made a nice recovery, but it cost a lot of time.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.888/195.14, Now #5
Right Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.854/202.21, Now #3

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.859/201.67, Now #5
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.776/203.46, Now #1

Grant's car made a left turn on the launch. Watson, fresh off of making the field in Vegas a couple weeks ago, made a nice run to give us the first seventy of the weekend.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.770/204.11, Now #1
Right Lane: Fernando Cuadra No Time, Now #9

Cuadra, like Watson, broke into the field at Las Vegas, but it sounded like something broke in the driveline here, the car nosing over almost immediately, then coasting slowly down the lane until the track crew came out to tow it to the first turnoff. meanwhile, Haas went right down the groove on a nice run.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.803/202.27, Now #4
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.781/203.43, Now #3

Two nice launches, 0.996 for Pawuk and 0.989 for Whisnant, but only Whisnant made it into the seventies.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.739/204.17, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.787/203.80, Now #5

Two nice runs, two more sub-one-second 60-foot times, 0.985 for Krisher, 0.994 for Yates.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.754/204.88, Now #2
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.775/203.61, Now #4

Two more good runs, Gaines slower in the first 60 feet, 1.002 to Johnson's 0.988, but faster on the top end.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.795/203.31, Now #9
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.728/204.76, Now #1

The rear of WJ's car stepped out to the left on the launch, giving him a 0.999 60-foot time. Edwards took over the top spot fr now on a nice pass.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.753/203.92, Now #4
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.744/205.26, Now #3

Koretsky's car made a hard move to the left on the launch, then stormed down the track. Once again, great 60-foot times in both lanes, 0.989 for Smith, 0.993 for Koretsky.

Left Lane: Steve Johns Runs 6.751/204.17, Now #4
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.813/202.15, Now #14

The short times continue to be below one second, Johns with a 0.994, Allen a 0.988, but Allen was unable to convert that into a seventies elapsed time. Panella's good-looking run is already down to 15th and fading fast.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 13.397/65.79, Now #22
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.733/205.22, Now #2

Jeg launched, shook with a 1.034 60-foot time, and slowed. Morgan made a nice, clean, straight pass to put Panella's 6.815 on the bubble with four hotdogs yet to run.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.766/204.08, Now #9
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.744/205.35, Now #4

The bad news is, WJ was 13th before these two ran, making it likely he would be outside the field after these final two pairs were finished.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.729/204.82, Now #3
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.717/205.94, Now #1

Line's car made a big wiggle on the launch, scrubbing off a little time, while Anderson hooked up and scooted, right down the groove, with the quickest and fastest pass of the day.
