POMONA-2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 36th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 7.072/195.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 7.058/195.28, Now #1

2:43 PM We have wind blowing cross ways to the track and it has seemed to cause the bikes and trucks to move around a bit. We're about to see if it has the same affect on the cars. Both drivers were down the middle of the lane but they both have some work to do.

Left Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.031/195.45, Now #1
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 12.041/72.81, Now #4

Delgado gets loose before half track and shuts it off. Klein takes a very temporary pole position.

Left Lane: John Geyer Runs 7.931/124.13, Now #4
Right Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 14.228/60.46, Now #6

Both drivers get loose and shut off early. Geyer was off the throttle about half track and Coffman was off before 300 feet.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.971/190.51, Now #1
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.021/196.53, Now #2

Blakeney was very loose. Koretsky is on top.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 7.034/195.73, Now #4
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.062/195.73, Now #6

Not much to say. Both down the middle and both with identical mph.

Left Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 7.035/194.83, Now #6
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 7.022/196.64, Now #3

No wind problems here. Both are in the top half of the field for the moment.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 9.427/99.46, Now #12
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.987/196.36, Now #2

Geoffrion moves in right behind a surprising Koretsky. Marnell shut off very early.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.006/196.42, Now #3
Right Lane: V. Gaines No Time, Now #16

Gaines makes the burnout first and the car dies at the end of a long one. Morgan waits as he is pushed back. The Dodge leaves hard but makes a hard turn towards the rail. Morgan turns something ugly into a piece of art as he muscles the car back to the middle of the lane and into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.982/197.22, Now #2
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.002/195.68, Now #4

Another good pair of runs and we now have a bump spot. It's held down by Danny Coffman.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.099/171.03, Now #14
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.132/175.41, Now #15

Smith wastes a 1.023 60 foot number as the car gets loose after half track. Martino will have to step up on Friday.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.961/197.51, Now #2
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.954/797.48, Now #1

We have two new players at the top of the field. Alderman puts the Dodge on the pole and Allen moves his Firebird right end behind him.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.945/198.06, Now #1
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.982/196.67, Now #6

Yates brings the Splitfire Firebird to the line and then to the top of the pack. Stevens gets a bit loose but gets a nice pass. Mike Thomas is on the bump.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.946/198.00, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.965/196.27, Now #5

Troy leaves hard and moves the Jegs car into the #2 spot. Pawuk makes the show in the #5 hole.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.924/197.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.981/199.37, Now #8

Warren gets top speed of the round but it's Krisher that moves to the top of the field.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.945/198.82, Now #3
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.922/197.59, Now #1

The Coughlin clan has announced that the proceeds from their souvenir trailer will be donated to the fund that was established this week for the Steve Evans family. Beyond that Jeg goes out and sets the low ET of the first round. That ends the first session with Jeg on the pole and Blakeney on the bump.
