POMONA-2 - Pro Stock Bike Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Bike at the 36th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Reggie Showers Runs 22.375/28.00, Now #22; Best prior run: 23.164/24.07, Was #21
Right Lane: Fred Camarena Runs 7.486/173.72, Now #10; No Prior Run

2:20 PM Both riders here had problems yesterday, Camarena dead in the water and Showers with an aborted run. Once again Showers shut it down at the first gearshift, the front wheel banging down hard. Camarena went from the outhouse to the field on a nice run.

Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.433/177.60, Now #6; Best prior run: 13.523/121.08, Was #20
Right Lane: Lori Francis No Time, Now #23; No Prior Run

Once again Francis' Harley broke on the launch, rolling to a stop with the engine dead a few feet off the starting line. Good pass for Berry, smooth and straight.

Left Lane: Tony Mullen Runs 7.352/182.01, Now #4; Best prior run: 8.840/101.56, Was #19
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.435/172.65, Now #8; No Prior Run

Mullen had problems at half track yesterday and figured to move into the top part of the field here...which he did nicely after a somewhat wobbly launch. Nice run by Phillips too, but well behind Mullen.

Left Lane: Kevin Smith Runs 7.736/165.76, Now #18; Best prior run: 8.010/165.82, Was #20
Right Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.401/174.91, Now #6; Best prior run: 14.046/48.15, Was #22

's bike had a bad case of the wobbles at half track but he held on to complete the run. Very nice run by DeSantis after a busted run yesterday.

Left Lane: Brian DeLong Runs 7.530/175.80, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.749/159.59, Was #19
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.256/181.25, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.055/100.53, Was #22

Brown also figured to move well up into the field after a half-pass yesterday. He did more than that, making the quickest pass of the weekend so far.

Left Lane: Brian Ayers Runs 7.446/177.93, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.529/176.49, Was #17
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.422/173.72, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.868/130.29, Was #22

Two more solid recoveries, the crosswind much less of a factor today.

Left Lane: Larry Cook Runs 7.614/177.84, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.465/175.48, Was #16
Right Lane: David Feazell Runs 7.792/165.31, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.784/166.85, Was #22

No help for these two...

Left Lane: Greg Underdahl Runs 7.468/178.47, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.445/173.96, Was #13
Right Lane: Clarence Markham No Time, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.719/174.03, Was #20

Markham broke at the line. Underdahl was out of the groove, toward the centerline, for most of his run.

Left Lane: Blaine Hale Runs 7.445/175.78, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.439/177.56, Was #12
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.884/174.89, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.517/172.89, Was #18

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 7.309/179.21, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.413/181.25, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.412/176.93, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.449/173.99, Was #15

A pair of pretty good runs, Smith on a bit straighter run than Johnson.

Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.353/180.69, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.367/180.65, Was #7
Right Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.345/181.08, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.339/180.38, Was #4

These two ran pretty close to their first set of numbers, just a few thousandths better or worse.

Left Lane: Angelle Seeling Runs 7.248/180.57, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.339/174.68, Was #5
Right Lane: Matt Hines Runs 7.245/183.22, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.279/183.17, Was #2

Last pair. They push Brown down a couple of slots on a nice side-by-side exhibition, Hines the quicker of the two as he was last night, but this time by just 0.003 seconds.
