POMONA-2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 36th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.079/193.21, Now #24; No Prior Run
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.890/126.98, Now #27; Best prior run: 9.427/99.46, Was #27

2:37 PM Session two opens with Jeg on the top of the field and Hurley Blakeney on the bump. The clouds are almost gone but the air temperature is in the low 60's. Marnell gets very, very out of shape. Gaines makes his first hit of the weekend and still has work to do.

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 7.660/138.27, Now #27; Best prior run: 14.228/60.46, Was #30
Right Lane: John Geyer Runs 10.195/89.61, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.931/124.13, Was #28

Both cars were very out of shape but Coffman came very close to losing the back end of the car. Geyer may have seen him coming.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.988/196.47, Now #14; Best prior run: 12.041/72.81, Was #30
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.053/195.22, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.099/171.03, Was #25

Delgado throws out the first six of the session and makes the field. Smith Gets no help.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.052/195.51, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.132/175.41, Was #27
Right Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 6.987/195.73, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.072/195.08, Was #25

Delgado slips down a spot as Nickens moves into the field. Martino was off all the way down.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 9.476/98.18, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.062/195.73, Was #26
Right Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 6.964/197.36, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.035/194.83, Was #22

Thomas was way out of shape right around half track. That seems to have been a problem for several vehicles in the Pro sessions. Yates makes the top half with the second team car.

Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 7.035/195.28, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.058/195.28, Was #25
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.986/197.42, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.034/195.73, Was #22

Osborne puts Delgado back out of the field. Rivera got close to the centerline and had to haul it back to the center.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 8.295/119.62, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.022/196.64, Was #21
Right Lane: Brad Klein No Time, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.031/195.45, Was #22

Klein was pushed back after the burnout and will miss the session. Patrick gets to the transition and the car gets loose on him.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 6.995/195.82, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.021/196.53, Was #20
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.976/198.00, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.006/196.42, Was #19

Blakeney is loose but Morgan makes the field.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.991/195.82, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.002/195.68, Was #20
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.940/198.50, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.982/197.22, Was #13

Jeter is starting to get his ride going in the right direction. Here he moves into the #3 hole. Johnson gets down the left lane better that all others in this session.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.941/197.36, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.987/196.36, Was #16
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.938/197.31, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.971/190.51, Was #11

Geoffrion gets well away from the bump spot in his Dodge. Koretsky makes a bigger move into the #3 hole. That bumped Nickens and puts Osborne on the bubble.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.918/196.70, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.982/196.67, Was #15
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.964/197.65, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.961/197.51, Was #10

A 1.00 60 foot number gets even better as Stevens move all the way to the top of the ladder. All gets no help from this pass.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.937/198.52, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.981/199.37, Was #15
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.938/198.61, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.946/198.00, Was #9

Almost identical runs for this pair and they move way up into the field.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.965/197.62, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.965/196.27, Was #14
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.941/198.17, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.945/198.06, Was #10

Pawuk had his hands full and I expected him to lift at any moment. No lift and he equals his time from the first session. Yates picks up two spots.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 13.186/65.57, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.954/197.48, Was #11
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.968/198.79, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.945/198.82, Was #10

Both drivers are very out of shape but it's Alderman that wastes a 1.00 60 foot number. Kurt was loose but saved the run.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.904/197.71, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.922/197.59, Was #2
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.924/197.97, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.924/197.80, Was #3

Coughlin moves even further ahead of the field with a loose 6.90 in the left lane. Krisher was just a tick behind. That ends a great session and we move into the Fuel Funny Cars.
