I'm Back
By Norm Froscher

As I was saying...

It was just a heart valve replacement. And everything now seems A-OK. Not that I was wasn't concerned, but let's say I was confident, because I I'd prayed over it and had Jesus Christ my savior with me.

And as I said in that previous offering, I don't remember the actual details because I was asleep, under anesthesia. I mean from that Thursday morning until Saturday evening, when I awoke in my room, it's a blank.

You could have run John Force and Gary Scelzi past me in a best two of three or four of seven climatic drag races right outside the hospital and I wouldn't have been aware of it.

But oh, I knew I'd been operated on from that Saturday point on. Surgeon Dr. Jeffery Snyder had said the recuperation would take four to six weeks after the hospital and he again was right. That's with a couple of pain pills daily and some other medication.

And horror of horrors, I was unable to drive for four weeks. But that, too, passed.

Before moving on I want to thank my loved ones and my friends for their thoughts, prayers and support during the trying time. I can attest that the power of prayers answered actually can send a chill up your spine, or as good friend Ercie Hill of the First in the Fours team headed by husband Eddie, says, "really cause me to break out in goose bumps."

Thanks.

Now we're moving on and before we know it, competition in the year 2001 will be under way.

One thing I'm really looking forward to is NHRA's new television package. Naturally, many of us can’t make but a few National Events, so the tube is our contact.

Along that line, here's some other things I would like to see in, perhaps in the form of New Year's resolutions:

* Al Hofmann win a race for Jim Dunn, just to prove they're both able to do it.

* Regardless of your baseball leanings, have a successful year for Darrell Gwynn and that Yankees Top Fueler. And thanks to George Steinbrenner for coming into the sport.

* And since the above is neat tie in between two sports, what would be wrong with the Los Angeles Lakers moving into the sport, also. Just think, their entry could be the Shaqmobile.

* May 2001 also be a banner year for Racers For Christ and for D.R.A.W. We sometimes get so caught up in the on-track events that we don't take time to appreciate what these two fine organizations give to the sport.

* Yeah, we mentioned Hofmann, so isn't it time for some of the others who have been struggling to hit it big, as in the way Cory McClenathan did this past year.

* And yes, we miss you Eddie and Ercie Hill. Any chance of you coming back with us as car owners, a la...

* Joe Amato. Yes good luck in your new venture and we all hope Snoopy will ride with your new entry. Remember that blimp. Your Snoopy will be welcomed back on the drag strip.

Just like NASCAR saluted Darrell Waltrip on his retirement, we say to you, "Thanks for the Memories."

* A great start to all the youngsters trying to make their mark. And along that line, let us mention Matthew Smith.

Oh, you not aware of Matthew Smith? Well, he's Ricky Smith's son and he's riding a motorcycle. In fact, did quite well here in Gainesville and may be moving to Pro Stock Bike before long. You heard it here.

* A safe season. No argument here?

* No rain delays. Do I have an argument with that? Oh, maybe from the concession folks? Naw, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

* Finally, to all the racers, teams, officials and fans of this wonderful sport and most of all to the readers of this corner, a most happy, healthy and prosperous Holiday Season and New Year.
