Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 3rd annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.868/237.09, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.974/229.88, Was #5
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.046/229.06, Now #8; Best prior run: 9.597/76.73, Was #16

6:33 PM That's a little more like what Vouros was looking for, closing the gap on Rector. Nice recovery for Dobbs, the car initially spinning the tires, but then hooking up solidly for a 0.983 60-foot time

Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 7.772/114.56, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.928/234.13, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.152/226.07, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.546/231.12, Was #14

Etter's car sports a classy metalflake paint job. It also runs pretty well, stepping way up over its initial lap here. Atchison was way ahead of Etter to 330 feet, then slowed.

Left Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.544/216.03, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.513/219.19, Was #12
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 5.995/231.48, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.944/220.75, Was #5

Midyette's car took a crooked path to the finish line and Midyette did a good job of taming it down.Lancaster was slow off the line and fell back rapidly.

Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.183/224.10, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.312/219.35, Was #11
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 7.584/106.15, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.937/241.02, Was #4

Both cars left hard and Cannister was on a good pace, but slowed before half track. Nice effort by Butler, improving by over a tenth of a second, but remaining in the same spot on the ladder.

Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 13.758/57.11, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.013/236.22, Was #7
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.907/236.22, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.523/153.06, Was #14

Both cars had problems on the top end on their first pass. This time around, brand's problems came immediately, the rear tires chattering hard, the car getting very sideways and heading for the wall before he lifted. Thomas' run looked good, straight and smooth.

Left Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 8.161/125.94, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.203/209.79, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.046/226.18, Now #10; No Prior Run

Van Hauen spun the tires hard, pedaled, spun again, then got them hooked up only to lose power at half track. Full pass by Bogolo, not good enough for a five, but enough to get solidly in the field.

Left Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.296/214.59, Now #15; Best prior run: 12.413/69.48, Was #19
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.197/226.30, Now #14; Best prior run: 11.020/74.02, Was #18

Double bump, putting Jeff Lancaster on the bubble at 6.513. Both runs looked okay, just not quick.

Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 5.861/239.17, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.521/159.48, Was #17
Right Lane: Russell Mudd No Time, Now #19; Best prior run: 8.559/105.31, Was #19

Wow! Comella steps way up on a very nice run. Mudd was way behind and struggling, his chutes out well before the finish line - but that didn't keep him from taking out the finish line timing reflectors. He came so close to the 1,000-foot marker (actually, it's at 990 feet at this track) that he knocked it out of alignment, then center-punched the finish line speed start and elapsed time reflectors.

Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.084/235.72, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.059/234.68, Was #12
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 10.826/65.82, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.984/236.90, Was #8

Foster made a full pass. McMillen launched into shake, dropped a couple cylinders, and then he shut it off.
