POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 38th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jeff Taylor Runs 16.869/42.86, Now #2
Right Lane: Randy Daniels Runs 8.508/115.18, Now #1
Taylor makes his debut for Pro Stock in 2002 in a rough manner. The car made a hard right off the line and he shuts off. Daniels was all over the right lane.
Left Lane: Jose Maldonado Runs 6.965/198.82, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Jr Runs 6.990/196.93, Now #2
Trumble wandered around a bit in his lane but still cards a six. Maldonado runs well in the other lane.
Left Lane: Jim Bernard Runs 6.920/199.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.955/198.76, Now #2
Where did that come from? Bernard goes to the top of the field, followed by Geoffrion in the Ford.
Left Lane: Don Smith Runs 6.889/200.53, Now #1
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.891/200.05, Now #2
Conditions are just about perfect. Witness the time for Don Smith. Delgado was just a tick behind and the sweep the top of the qualifying field.
Left Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 10.036/89.91, Now #9
Right Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 6.862/200.80, Now #1
Jeter's ride signals for a left hand turn as soon as he let the clutch out. We have another top qualifier as Jamie Yates takes the spot.
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.983/198.15, Now #8
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.890/201.40, Now #3
Stevens cards a 1.010 sixty foot number but falls off after that. Watson goes 1.018 in sixty and goes to the #3 hole.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 11.187/79.59, Now #13
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.856/200.95, Now #1
Nobile shook hard after reporting a 1.005 sixty. He shuts off and Patrick becomes the latest to lead the pack.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.884/200.65, Now #4
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.868/202.00, Now #3
Stanfield goes 1.007 in sixty and manages to hold it to the top end. He is now #3. Koretsky was right with him until ab out 1000 feet then he fell back.
Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 12.752/58.86, Now #16
Nance was all over the left lane on his single and has to call it off before half track.
Left Lane: JR Carr Runs 6.880/201.34, Now #5
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.846/201.64, Now #1
Now it's Tom Lee as the meanest dog in the pack. Carr was right behind him and is in the top half of a tough field. Brad Jeter is on the bubble.
Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.890/199.73, Now #10
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.854/201.58, Now #2
Both drivers bump into the field with nice passes. Pawuk went 1.016 in sixty and Martino's short time was 1.010.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 11.265/79.58, Now #21
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.872/201.88, Now #6
Troy started to swap ends at about the 100 foot mark and shuts it down. Gaines is loose but gathers it back in and finishes the run. The bump is now Richie Stevens.
Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 10.531/86.35, Now #21
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.829/201.70, Now #1
Not bad for a 900 foot track. I don't know what the corrected altitude is right now but it's got to be good. Hammonds was busy keeping the car pointed down track while Wilson was setting low ET of the first session.
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.857/201.40, Now #5
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 10.803/84.21, Now #23
Allen has problems and shuts off early. Alderman drives out of tire shake and makes the top half.
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.896/200.47, Now #15
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 9.497/99.18, Now #22
Whisnant was moving around from the time he left the clutch out to the time he lifted. Marnell was under powered at the hit but finishes the run.
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 11.784/74.06, Now #29
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.843/201.58, Now #2
Johnson really shook the tires hard and called it off. Edwards goes to the second spot.
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.806/203.28, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.816/202.61, Now #2
Kurt just misses the 6.803 track ET record and MPH. Johnson to the top spot and Krisher to #2.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.797/203.31, Now #1
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.810/203.58, Now #3
No doubt about the track ET and MPH records here. WJ gets the track ET record and the top qualifying spot. Anderson gets the MPH record and slots into the #3 position.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.855/200.92, Now #9
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.864/201.19, Now #13
This is the final pair of the session and everyone let's out a collective sigh when the numbers come up. We were getting a new top qualifier from every pair and this was almost a let down. Both make the field but neither could be real happy with their performance. JR Carr will be on the bump with his 6.880.
