NORWALK, Ohio -- The IHRA national event at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Md., will be known as the CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals beginning with the 2002 event. The name changed was announce today at the PRI show in Indianapolis.

The name change comes as the result of the event's switch to a full-scale IHRA national event featuring Top Fuel. The event will be held Sept. 27-29, 2002.

"We couldn't be happier than to be sponsoring the CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals," stated Scott Ginsburg, CARQUEST Director of Advertising. "While the President's Cup name was fitting for the past events at MIR, we felt with the shift to a full-fledged IHRA national event with Top Fuel was merit for a name change that reflects the new event at what will be a new track for racers and fans alike."

The 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals will not only feature Top Fuel for the first time at Maryland Int'l Raceway, but the event will also take place at a newly refurbished track following a seven-figure capital improvement project.

"Maryland International Raceway owner Royce Miller and IHRA made the commitment to bring Top Fuel to the untapped Washington and Baltimore markets," said Bill Bader, IHRA President. "With Top Fuel, I fully expect attendance at the event to explode. "The Kings of the Sport" have never raced in our nation’s capital and we’re thrilled to provide our Top Fuel teams (and their sponsors) visibility in America’s seventh largest media market."

Track improvements at Maryland International Raceway include improved ingress and egress, staging lanes and roadways, control tower including media center and corporate hospitality suites and new track lighting.

"I've always wanted to run MIR with the rest of the IHRA racers and now with all the track improvements I can't wait for Top Fuel to be included in the 2002 event," said Paul Romine, driver of the CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster and a 3-time IHRA champion. "I think the fans in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area are going to be in for a great show and I expect records to fall, considering what the other classes have achieved in past with the great atmospheric conditions that are common in late September in the Mid-Atlantic region."
