The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) announced today that Pontiac-GMC will return in 2002 as the Official Car and Official Truck of the NHRA.
It will be the sixth year that Pontiac has served as the Official Car of the NHRA and the 13th for GMC as the Official Truck of the 50-year-old drag racing sanctioning organization.
"We are extremely excited to continue our relationship with Pontiac-GMC as the Official Car and Official Truck of the NHRA," said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. "We value this long-lasting partnership with Pontiac-GMC, which has proven, over time, to be a beneficial business relationship for both NHRA and Pontiac-GMC. Our goal, moving forward, will be to continue to provide Pontiac-GMC with the return on investment they have grown accustomed to through their participation in NHRA Drag Racing." Since becoming the Official Car of the NHRA in 1996, Pontiac has earned a winning reputation by amassing No. 1 qualifying awards, national event wins, performance records and series championships. Pontiac is the all-time win leader among auto manufacturers in the competitive world of NHRA Pro Stock racing.
This season Pontiac has tallied 20 national event victories, raced in 39 final rounds and captured 24 No. 1 qualifying spots en route to a sixth consecutive NHRA Manufacturer's Cup title (1996-2001).
"The power, performance and excitement of NHRA Drag Racing make Pontiac's participation an obvious choice for GM's Excitement division, and the superior capability of GMC trucks will continue to define Professional Grade for the NHRA's support staff as the Official Truck," said Lynn Myers, marketing general manager for Pontiac-GMC. "We're proud of our affiliation with the NHRA, and look forward to working with the sanctioning body, our teams and drivers and all of the participating sponsors who continue to make this sport grow."
In addition, Pontiac will again be the title sponsor for the 38th annual Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals presented by Summit Racing, June 13-16, 2002. Pontiac has sponsored the summer classic at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio since 1996.
As the Official Car of the NHRA, Pontiac provides support vehicles for administrative and on-site personnel of the NHRA. As the Official Truck, GMC also provides support vehicles for NHRA staff, and GMC Sierras and Yukons for the NHRA Safety Safari, allowing them to perform their essential trackside duties.
