LAS VEGAS 2 - Funny Car Round 1 Eliminations
By Darryl Jackman

LAS VEGAS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the Inaugural AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  13 Al Hofmann 4.975 294.05 Q 4 Tim Wilkerson 4.838 316.52
 *****WINNER***** 0.512 5.104 267.32 E1 0.508 5.151 272.94
11:00 AM Wilkerson has not made all that many races this season so this is the first time he and Hofmann have met in 2001. We're on hold for TV for about two minutes. The call goes out and both car come to life. Hofmann has the yellow Mooneyes body on the car for round one. He has problems getting the car to fire so he makes a very short burnout. Even leave but Hofmann pulls away as Wilkerson hazes the tires hard from about 1100 feet.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  12 Del Worsham 4.973 309.49 Q 5 Dean Skuza 4.855 315.64
                  0.503 4.935 308.14 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.504 4.852 315.56
Skuza and Worsham have met twice before this year with Skuza getting both wins. Skuza and Spiderman were really hauling the mail on this one and makes his best run of the weekend. To add injury to the Worsham team the burst panel blows out just before the stripe.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 John Force 4.790 317.94 Q 15 Bob Bode 5.047 300.86
                  0.000 No Time E1 0.000 No Time
Force and Bode have not met at an event this season. This is a big round one for Force as he will need to win both this event and Pomona to get his 100th win. You're not going to believe this one. Bode leaves before the tree is activated...and so does Force. That is a double DQ. Both drivers are eliminated. We may here more about this one.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Tony Pedregon 4.836 315.19 Q 14 John Lawson 4.982 306.67
 *****WINNER***** 0.544 4.830 315.78 E1 0.526 4.998 307.79
Pedregon and Lawson are meeting for the first time this year. Big round for Pedregon as he's in a battle for third place in the points. Tony upholds the honor of team Force with a big win. That was Tony's best run of the weekend. That makes him the only Castrol car left in the field as Gary Densham was a DNQ.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   1 Whit Bazemore 4.748 323.04 Q 16 Jerry Toliver 5.098 307.51
 *****WINNER***** 0.497 4.827 320.28 E1 0.465 5.067 293.60
As a mark of Toliver's season this will be the first time these two have met in eliminations all season. This is Bazemore's eighth #1 qualifying job in the last eleven events. Darn good streak in the Lee Beard tuned Funny Car. A pair of fantastic lights for fuel cars. Toliver made a race of it but just doesn't have the power to catch Bazemore.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   6 Scotty Cannon 4.856 317.72 Q 11 Bob Gilbertson 4.912 310.34
                  0.533 6.935 124.10 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.508 4.881 305.22
Scotty and Gilbertson are 1-1 this season. Cannon was consistent in qualifying and this may be his best chance all year for a win. Nope. It's not going to happen for Scotty today. Gilbertson got a bit of a lead at the hit and Cannon struck the tires around half track and was forced to lift.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   7 Tommy Johnson Jr. 4.859 313.66 Q 10 Bruce Sarver 4.908 306.88
                  0.467 5.453 209.65 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.509 4.901 308.71
Sarver and Johnson have faced off twice this year with each driver getting one win. TJ beat Sarver at the Sears Craftsman Nationals and Sarver returned the favor at the US Nationals. Due to Force's problem this is for a round two single. Johnson is spinning the tires before half track and It's Sarver that gets the win and the round two single.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   8 Ron Capps 4.866 310.91 Q 9 Frank Pedregon 4.888 306.46
 *****WINNER***** 0.486 4.884 312.57 E1 0.462 6.070 157.47
Capps has faced Frank Pedregon twice before in 2001 and lost both times. Frank beat Capps in the finals of the Southern Nationals and in the first round at the Matco Tools Supernationals. This one went to Capps after Pedregon begins smoking the tires before half track. In round two it will be Bazemore and Capps, with Bazemore having lane choice. Skuza will have choice over Hofmann; Sarver gets his single and Tony Pedregon will have choice over Bob Gilbertson.
