By Darryl Jackman

LAS VEGAS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the Inaugural AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   1 Pat Austin 5.728 249.72 Q 9 Steve Gasparrelli 5.832 246.17
   (D VanGundy I) 0.515 5.776 248.71 E1 (J Weaver ) 0.489 5.804 248.20
 *****WINNER***** 0.472 5.806 247.93 E2 0.503 5.928 233.28
12:06 PM On paper this is all Austin, but since we don't run on paper we'll stage up and see what happens. Austin gets the light and the win. Gasparrelli has a flash out of the right side of the engine as he neared the lights but the Safety Safari says 'Play on'!

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Bucky Austin 5.756 249.49 Q 5 Bob Newberry 5.758 245.27
   (D Gordon ) 0.509 5.799 249.30 E1 (T Branch ) 0.517 5.874 243.59
 *****WINNER***** 0.490 5.875 248.02 E2 0.526 5.997 245.05
The 'Other' Austin is next up to face Eastern hitter Bob Newberry. Austin is out first but has severe shake around 300 feet. Newberry has the same problem in the right lane but doesn't recover as quickly as Austin. That sets up a family feud in the semi final with the two Austins facing each other. Pat will face Bucky with lane choice in hand.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 Jay Payne 5.753 243.72 Q 7 Vern Moats 5.816 243.81
   (S Griboski ) 0.517 5.804 243.24 E1 (L Miner ) 0.510 5.857 243.46
 *****WINNER***** 0.560 6.624 153.95 E2 0.554 8.074 113.55
This one shapes up to be a good one. Payne defeated Griboski in the first round while Moats got the best of Miner. After an even leave the cars were side by side until about 400 feet. Moats got out of the groove and drifted close to the center line. So close that he clicked it. Payne pulled ahead but shut it off early himself. The reason was not evident.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Von Smith 5.755 249.16 Q 6 Steve Harker 5.803 245.54
   (B Harrington) 0.481 5.830 246.30 E1 (R Bateman ) 0.500 5.878 240.38
 *****WINNER***** 0.498 9.973 85.80 E2 0.393 5.847 245.54
Smith can't take Harker lightly as they were close in the first round. Harker can't wait and turns on the red light. Smith shakes hard and gets out of the groove forcing him to lift. Payne's 6.62 turns out to be good enough for lane choice in the other semi.
