LAS VEGAS 2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the Inaugural AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jamey Ober Runs 7.201/191.78, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.205/191.02, Was #32
Right Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.207/191.84, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.175/192.38, Was #31

4:03 PM Final round, with Darrell Alderman on the bump at 6.999 seconds and both Warren Johnson and Jeg Coughlin on the outside of the field.

No help for this first pair...

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 7.140/193.68, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.103/194.46, Was #30
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.122/194.86, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.094/195.39, Was #29

So far the 60-foot times have been worse than earlier today, probably because the air temperature is higher.

Left Lane: Tom Lee Runs 7.240/173.76, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.078/194.74, Was #28
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.092/195.19, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.066/195.70, Was #27

Lee had problems getting the car into reverse after the burnout, but finally did the trick. Nobile's car was still loose on the launch, but then ran fairly straight. Lee was off the mark all the way.

Left Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.071/193.46, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.056/194.41, Was #26

Klein had a competitive 1.032 60-foot time, but ran out of steam on the top end.

Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 7.114/193.18, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.032/195.45, Was #21
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.057/195.82, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.044/195.05, Was #24

Morgan comes within a hundredth of his previous best, not bad compared with the other runs we've seen this session.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.090/194.30, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.018/195.73, Was #19
Right Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 10.293/87.94, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.042/197.28, Was #23

Bo shut it off early in the run. Thomas lost lots of ground.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 7.069/194.88, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.013/196.07, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 7.063/195.62, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.041/196.02, Was #22

Both cars got a bit squirrely in the middle of the run.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.996/197.13, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.007/197.57, Was #17
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 7.047/195.48, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.023/195.76, Was #20

WJ needed to get in to protect his 150-point lead in the Winston championship. He also had a 286-race qualifying streak going, but that wasn't important. He has been chasing "gremlins" this weekend, problems that kept shutting the engine down on the top end. Johnson made a solid launch, a 1.040 60-foot time, and then streaked away from Jeter to get in, one spot above the bump.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.020/196.79, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.999/197.80, Was #17
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 7.037/195.76, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.997/196.02, Was #16

These two were the last with a shot at bumping Johnson. They came up short, so the points leader will be in eliminations tomorrow. Now all WJ needs to do to clinch the title is to stay even with Jim Yates through eliminations tomorrow.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.054/195.90, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.989/197.33, Was #12
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.050/194.52, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.993/197.25, Was #14

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.025/196.02, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.983/197.19, Was #10
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 14.299/75.44, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.992/196.82, Was #13

So far Johnson is the only driver in the sixes this session. Blakeney shut off very early.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.014/197.51, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.981/197.51, Was #9
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 7.041/197.10, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.984/197.62, Was #11

KJ's car made several moves, scrubbing off elapsed time with every wiggle.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.056/196.04, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.979/197.19, Was #8
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.024/195.65, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.974/197.54, Was #6

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.031/196.07, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.976/197.25, Was #7
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.980/197.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.961/198.06, Was #3

Two good runs, Krisher setting low ET of the session so far, the only driver other than WJ to break into the sixes.

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.984/197.54, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.964/198.32, Was #5
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.001/197.33, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.954/198.41, Was #2

Hammonds posts second-quick time of the session, definitely ready to race again this weekend. Edwards comes up just short of the sixes.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.986/197.33, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.963/197.62, Was #4
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.989/197.33, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.949/197.77, Was #1

Make it five drivers in the sixes this session, the final pair both showing their quickness.
