MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 16th annual Keystone Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.076/196.24, Now #27; No Prior Run
8:28 PM Heck opens the evening session on a single. Conditions should be great for power - it's very chilly out there - but the track could be a bit too cold for maximum traction. Can't tell from Heck's run, but he did manage to get a lap in the books this time around.
Left Lane: David Strouse Jr. Runs 7.116/194.30, Now #29; Best prior run: 9.297/101.41, Was #32
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.979/196.67, Now #21; Best prior run: 12.537/69.15, Was #33
Both had busted runs in the first session, so again it's hard to gauge which way things will go in this session. Allen left with a 1.017 60-foot time, very stout, but fell off the pace on the top end and missed the cut.
Left Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 9.538/77.21, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.247/189.58, Was #31
Right Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 9.232/145.53, Now #33; Best prior run: 8.955/153.26, Was #33
Shorts launched, almost stopped, then continued. Wiggins left hard, got to about half track, then slowed.
Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 9.923/91.95, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.044/197.36, Was #27
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.933/198.53, Now #5; Best prior run: 8.533/113.69, Was #32
Yates gets in on a fine run, bumping Robert Patrick, but then the fun began. The parachute wrapped itself around the wheelie bar and Yates' brakes were not very effective. Finally the brakes locked up near the end of the pavement, spinning the car around so that it backed into the sand pit at the end of the pavement. The car stopped upright and apparently undamaged, but Yates and crew will have a lot of sand to clean out of the car. Blakeney left hard, but slowed before mid track.
Left Lane: Roger Jenkins Runs 6.987/195.65, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.006/196.50, Was #25
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 10.691/84.07, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.155/194.07, Was #31
Haas slowed almost immediately. Jenkins made a nice pass, but came up short of the quick field.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.947/197.31, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.006/197.36, Was #25
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.961/197.31, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.041/195.08, Was #27
The bump time these two needed to beat was 6.964. Both did, also bumping Brad Jeter. But Benza then found himself on the bubble, very vulnerable in the quick conditions.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.983/196.33, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.988/197.22, Was #26
Right Lane: Don Beverley Runs 12.370/70.02, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.033/195.62, Was #27
Beverley was very squirrely non the launch and shut it down. Morgan had a 1.01 60-foot time, but was also loose early in the run and came up well short of the field.
Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.952/196.85, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.976/197.08, Was #23
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 8.699/111.90, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.976/197.86, Was #22
This appears to be an all-or-nothing round, Geoffrion slowing almost immediately while Koretsky gets in, bumping Benza. Now Mike Thomas is on the bubble, at 6.961.
Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.981/198.32, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.973/197.94, Was #21
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.944/197.13, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.973/197.31, Was #22
AJ gets in, Martino loses momentum in the middle of the run and comes up just short. Now the bump belongs to V. Gaines at 6.960.
Left Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.934/196.67, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.962/197.54, Was #19
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.929/198.50, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.972/197.97, Was #21
Jeter had a 1.01 60-foot time, Patrick a 1.03. Two nice runs to bump Gaines and Tom Hammonds. Now the bubblesitter is Mark Pawuk at 6.956.
Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 11.015/80.54, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.961/198.61, Was #19
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.943/298.38, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.964/197.97, Was #21
Both were bumped earlier. Thomas' car dove at the wall on the launch and he had to give it up. Ozzie made a nice pass, bumping Pawuk. Now the bump time is Koretsky's 6.952.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.916/198.32, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.951/197.80, Was #15
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.936/197.51, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.960/197.71, Was #19
Two more good runs, bumping Koretsky and putting Troy Coughlin on the bubble at 6.950.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 8.979/105.57, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.950/198.09, Was #16
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.948/197.68, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.960/198.09, Was #19
Coughlin slows after 200 feet and Hammonds replaces him on the bubble.
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.874/198.55, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.947/197.74, Was #14
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.899/198.55, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.956/198.35, Was #19
Two great runs, Alderman with a 1.009 60-foot time, the quickest of the session, and Pawuk gets back in, bumping Hammond and leaping near the top of the ladder. Now the bump is John Nobile's 6.947.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.902/198.50, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.944/198.35, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.892/198.67, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.931/198.38, Was #8
There was a header fire on Jeg's car in the shutdown area - it finally went out with no damage.
Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.941/199.11, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.937/199.17, Was #13
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.906/198.76, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.922/198.47, Was #7
No improvement for KJ, small improvement for Marnell - good enough to move one rung up the ladder.
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 10.149/84.43, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.928/197.86, Was #8
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.888/200.23, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.892/200.11, Was #2
Nope, WJ can't catch Alderman tonight. Stevens' car moved over close to the wall and forced him to give it up.
That's it, a Dodge on the overnight pole at 6.874 and an Oldsmobile on the bump
spot at 6.947.
