MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 16th annual Keystone Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: David Strouse Jr. Runs 9.297/101.41, Now #1
3:43 PM First out is a new Pro Stock entry, in a '97 Cutlass. The car dove to the left on the launch and he had to lift.
Left Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 8.955/153.26, Now #1
Right Lane: Ed Heck No Time, Now #3
Heck's car destroyed something in the drive train, shedding pieces and parts over the first 200 feet of the track. His car coasted to a stop at 1,000 feet. Couldn't see what happened to Shorts, too busy watching Heck's car disintegrate.
Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 7.155/194.07, Now #1
Right Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 7.247/189.58, Now #2
Haas debuts a brand-new Mercury Cougar, a sleek-looking red car with "Cunningham Motorsports" on the side. The new car made a clean lap, a little to the right of the groove for much of the run.
Left Lane: Don Beverley Runs 7.033/195.62, Now #2
Right Lane: Roger Jenkins Runs 7.006/196.50, Now #1
Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 7.041/195.08, Now #4
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.006/197.36, Now #1
Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.960/198.09, Now #1
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.976/197.08, Now #2
Since last race Hammonds has found about 15 HP. This is his penultimate race this season, the upcoming NBA season having priority. Looks like the newfound HP is being put to good use. Nice pass by "local boy" Koretsky too.
Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.964/197.97, Now #2
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.044/197.36, Now #8
Hurley is supposed to have a new Mustang soon - but not this weekend, looks like.
Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.976/197.86, Now #4
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.961/198.61, Now #2
Two more good passes - and Hammonds is still #1...but the big dogs are still in the lanes.
Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.972/197.97, Now #4
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.988/197.22, Now #7
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.922/198.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.962/197.54, Now #4
Two more very nice passes, the cars apparently liking the Maple Grove air today.
Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.960/197.71, Now #4
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.951/197.80, Now #2
The hits just keep on coming...
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.973/197.31, Now #10
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.947/197.74, Now #2
Dodges, a pair. Two more good runs...
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 12.537/69.15, Now #24
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.973/197.94, Now #10
Allen's is the first car we've seen with visible tire shake on the launch.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 8.533/113.69, Now #23
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.928/197.86, Now #2
Something went wrong with Yates' run after a 1.02 60-foot time for both cars. Yates slowed around half track.
Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.956/198.35, Now #6
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.950/198.09, Now #4
THese two were not as quick over 60 feet, both close to 1.04 seconds, but they slipped into the top half of the field anyway.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.892/200.11, Now #1
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.937/199.17, Now #4
Kurt's car was still rolling when the light turned green but it doesn't seem to have hurt his ET. Nice pass by WJ, our first 200 mph speed of the weekend.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.931/198.38, Now #4
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.944/198.35, Now #6
Again 60-foot times in the 1.04-second range and solid ETs on the other end. After just one session, in the "heat of the day" (lots of sunshine, but only about 70 degrees), the bump time is Robert Patrick's 6.972 and WJ sits on the pole at 6.892.
