MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Lee Callaway jumped to the top of the field of Federal-Mogul Dragster to lead qualifying in the Mayor's Cup at Montgomery Motorsports Park. Callaway covered the quarter mile in 5.695 seconds at 242.91 mph for this, the fourth event in the NHRA Southeast Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. Troy Buff, of Spring, Texas, follows Callaway in the number two position with a pass of 5.788, 242.84 mph.

In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car class it was Chuck Cheeseman claiming the number one spot with a run of 5.830 at 247.86 mph. Cheeseman is followed by Tate Branch with a 5.889 second, 245.56 mph pass. Both Branch, and fellow funny car driver Richard Shaver, gave the crowd some excitement during second round of qualifying when their cars got out of the grove and brushed the retaining wall sending sparks shooting into the night. Neither driver was injured and are expected to return tomorrow for final qualifying prior to eliminations Saturday night.

Local favorites Johnny Moore and Mike Crutchfield, both of Montgomery, are qualified fourth and tenth respectively in the Super Stock categories.

Qualifying continues at Montgomery Motorsports Park Saturday at 10 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car receive one final qualifying pass and then begin eliminations at 6 p.m. Also schedules for Saturday evening will be a Top Fuel Dragster match race and Jet Funny Cars.
