INDY - Federal-Mogul Funny Car Round 1 Eliminations
By Darryl Jackman

CLERMONT, Ind. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 46th annual U.S. Nationals:

   3 Chuck Cheeseman 5.729 251.86 Q 14 Roger Cutler 6.124 245.72
 *****WINNER***** 0.521 5.718 250.97 E1 0.000 No Time
2:54 PM-Cutler is a no show for the first round of eliminations. He makes his best pass of the weekend and looks for lane choice.

   9 Bobby Martin 5.882 242.58 Q 8 Scott Palmer 5.882 243.41
                  0.846 5.847 245.09 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.486 5.855 244.47
The closest pair of the round as the eight and nine cars match up. These two actually wound up tied by et, with Palmer's mph making the call for position. Palmer out runs Martin in the first round.

   4 Pat Austin 5.780 250.97 Q 13 John Patton 6.013 241.37
 *****WINNER***** 0.477 5.766 249.86 E1 0.556 6.410 181.81
No problems for Austin against Patton. Patton moved about 10 feet before tire shake claimed the run. He pedaled but there was no second chance.

   6 Marc White 5.805 252.85 Q 11 Danny Townsend 5.950 247.97
 *****WINNER***** 0.467 5.840 252.33 E1 0.457 5.949 248.57
They were about even at the hit but White pulled away at every marker. Cheeseman will have lane choice over White in round two.

   7 Fred Hagen 5.840 250.78 Q 10 Kim Fritts 5.935 242.89
                  0.000 No Time E1 *****WINNER***** 0.664 5.807 245.76
Hagen's crew throws up their hands after the burnout and can only watch as Fritts singles for the round win. No idea what the problem was in the Hagen camp.

   5 Bob Newberry 5.799 249.39 Q 12 Vern Moats 5.964 245.81
 *****WINNER***** 0.537 5.746 250.92 E1 0.488 6.129 242.28
Moats was first off the line but by the 330 marker it was all Newberry. That was his best run of the weekend by a nickel. He will also have lane choice over Austin in the next round.

   2 Frank Manzo 5.726 254.66 Q 15 Jeff Craig 6.271 218.37
 *****WINNER***** 0.489 5.697 255.19 E1 0.535 6.214 196.27
No problems for our #1 qualifier here as he also sets his best et of the weekend. Craig gave it a shot but was just plain over matched. Manzo will have lane choice over Fritts next round.

   1 Tony Bartone 5.682 252.47 Q 16 Steve Addleman 6.298 194.63
 *****WINNER***** 0.496 5.676 252.80 E1 0.494 6.477 164.89
Bartone runs the best FMFC et of the entire weekend. Addleman left with him but got very involved with keeping the car off of the wall around half track. He got very loose and barely got it back into the lane. Bartone will race Palmer in round two. No doubt of who has lane choice.
