INDY - Federal-Mogul Dragster Round 1 Eliminations
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the 46th annual U.S. Nationals:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   8 Darren Nicholson 5.679 249.72 Q 9 Bill McCornack 5.731 245.72
 *****WINNER***** 0.524 5.624 249.35 E1 0.462 5.752 246.17
3:24 PM The first FMD round opens with the middle pairing on the ladder, the two cars just 0.052 seconds apart in qualifying, well within holeshot range for McCornack. McCornack did what he needed to, but Nicholson came back from a late start to step up with his best run of the weekend and win by a margin of victory = 0.066 seconds (approximately 24 feet).

   2 Jay Meyer 5.553 253.75 Q 15 Greg Roberts 5.959 192.06
 *****WINNER***** 0.502 5.580 251.67 E1 0.516 5.785 238.81
Roberts stepped way up from qualifying, almost two tenths of a second quicker than he qualified, but Meyer was still able to run away from him with ease to win by a margin of victory = 0.219 seconds (approximately 77 feet).

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Gary Ormsby 5.575 254.38 Q 14 Jeff Bohr 5.895 236.51
 *****WINNER***** 0.627 5.561 251.20 E1 0.450 5.868 238.17
Ormsby only had one bad pass in qualifying, Johnson was all over the place. But at the green Bohr took a huge holeshot, Ormsby uncharacteristically late, and Bohr led much of the way. However, despite the holeshot and his best run of the weekend, Bohr was unable to hold off Ormsby's top end charge and Ormsby won by a margin of victory = 0.130 seconds (approximately 45 feet). So far, Ormsby's ET is the quickest of eliminations.

   1 Rick Santos 5.527 256.94 Q 16 Bill Reichert 6.113 220.26
 *****WINNER***** 0.444 5.453 257.73 E1 0.577 6.085 219.83
Reichert is probably wondering where the freight train that ran over him came from, Santos nailing him to the tree and then running low ET of the weekend, by 0.07 seconds. Needless to say, Santos has lane choice against Nicholson in round two, tomorrow.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   6 Shelly Howard 5.641 253.14 Q 11 Shawn Bowen 5.786 251.16
 *****WINNER***** 0.471 5.659 251.11 E1 0.495 5.783 252.61
Bowen only made one pass in the 5.70s, the other three 5.90s. Howard was consistently quick on all three of her runs, losing the fourth when the car was unable to run. The race went true to form, both cars running close to their best qualifying numbers, giving Howard an easy win by a Margin of victory = 0.148 seconds (approximately 55 feet). She meets Ormsby in the second round, Ormsby with lane choice.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   7 Steve Federlin 5.661 250.32 Q 10 Phil Mass 5.781 241.20
 *****WINNER***** 0.440 5.698 250.00 E1 0.477 5.804 244.21
Both cars ran true to form, smooth, clean passes, giving Federlin a margin of victory = 0.143 seconds (approximately 51 feet). However, he loses lane choice to Meyer in round two.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   5 Russ Lindert 5.634 248.11 Q 12 Gary Ward 5.882 238.98
 *****WINNER***** 0.510 5.605 249.67 E1 0.313 19.016 37.24
Lindert had problems getting the car into reverse, but finally began backing up after his burnout. Ward left way early, then smoked the tires, while Lindert stepped up a bit over his qualifying best.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Dave Hirata 5.633 255.00 Q 13 Randy Bayne 5.885 233.56
 *****WINNER***** 0.503 5.525 261.12 E1 0.531 5.753 242.32
Hirata's car has been very inconsistent this weekend, but even his bad runs were close to Bayne's best. Bayne picked up a bunch from qualifying, but so did Hirata and Bayne was unable to keep up with the A-Fuel car on the top end. Margin of victory = 0.256 seconds (approximately 91 feet). Hirata will have lane choice against Lindert in the second round.
