INDY - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #4
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 46th annual U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.989/196.44, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.982/196.76, Was #2
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.008/195.73, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.016/195.76, Was #12

10:46 AM As we begin the penultimate qualifying session the bump is V. Gaines' 7.033 - and judging from the trucks and bikes, the field should be reshuffled when we get done.

Both cars posted 1.03 60-foot times here, very stout launches and very clean runs.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.036/194.55, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.003/194.72, Was #8
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 7.019/194.63, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.999/195.19, Was #7

1.04 and 1.03 short times for AJ and "the Kid," respectively, but no improvement.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.040/195.65, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.996/196.64, Was #6
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 7.058/195.00, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.020/196.27, Was #13

Looks like the conditions are not going to produce a major reshuffle after all, the conditions producing runs pretty close to the numbers they ran last night. That makes Krisher's 6.989 a very impressive run.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.065/193.96, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.013/195.48, Was #11
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.018/195.45, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.986/195.96, Was #4

Allen has had his hand stitched twice here at Indy after a pair of mechanical accidents while working on the car. Both drivers fell off a bit this session.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.551/161.16, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.100/194.58, Was #31
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 7.092/193.10, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.082/194.24, Was #28

Thomas drove through the clutch with a 1.13 60-foot time.

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 7.065/194.32, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.062/194.55, Was #23
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.036/194.86, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.010/195.79, Was #10

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.087/194.46, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.066/194.80, Was #25
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.082/194.91, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.024/195.90, Was #15

Still no changes in the field.

Left Lane: Bill Shorts No Time, Now #37; Best prior run: 8.414/158.22, Was #37
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.131/193.29, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.033/194.86, Was #16

Shorts found a problem before the burnout and the team pushed it back to the pits. Gaines loses a tenth and will have to continue to sweat it out on the bubble.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 7.063/194.21, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.066/194.94, Was #24
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.063/195.28, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.070/195.68, Was #26

This pair certainly made Gaines sweat, both usually able to qualify well. But no payoff for either car and Gaines gets a break.

Left Lane: Roger Jenkins Runs 7.112/193.71, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.037/194.72, Was #18

Right Lane: Danny Coffman No Time, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.060/195.17, Was #22

Coffman's car rolled the beams and then stalled. No help for Smith.

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.157/193.57, Now #34; Best prior run: 7.125/193.49, Was #34
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 7.252/191.05, Now #35; Best prior run: 7.260/190.48, Was #35

Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 7.115/193.54, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.049/194.83, Was #20
Right Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 17.664/60.02, Now #36; Best prior run: 7.270/189.31, Was #36

Wiggins' car lurched and almost stalled on the launch. Adams posted a respectable 1.05 short time, but lost ground on the top end.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.997/197.02, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.992/197.57, Was #5
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.151/192.47, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.053/194.77, Was #21

Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.119/194.35, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.077/194.18, Was #27

Jeg had a 1.05 60-foot time and was unable to match WJ's pace on the top end.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.062/193.74, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.015/195.25, Was #12
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.134/193.43, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.096/194.97, Was #29

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.060/194.91, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.036/195.28, Was #17
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.031/196.30, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.986/197.39, Was #3

WJ and Krisher's runs look bigger and bigger with each pair down the track.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 7.080/194.97, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.976/196.39, Was #1
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 7.137/192.99, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.038/194.94, Was #19

The final pair of a rugged session with no changes in the field. Only two drivers got into the sixes this session, Ron Krisher and Warren Johnson.
