CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 46th annual U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.799/249.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.972/246.93, Was #7
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.985/240.95, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.980/245.54, Was #8
3:22 PM-Next to make an appearance from around the corner is the Federal-Mogul Funnycars. This is their second session of the day and the conditions my be slightly better than the early session. The temperature is down a couple of degrees and the clouds have moved in much heavier. The Safety Safari is prepping the starting line and we are just a couple of minutes away from the session. Tony Bartone starts the session on pole, while Kim Fritz holds down the sixteenth position.
Newberry picks up almost two tenths from his prior best and moves to the three
hole. Moats actually loses .005 and gets no help at all. Both cars seemed to launch
very soft as if the the starting line were a question mark.
Left Lane: Danny Townsend Runs 5.950/247.97, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.013/248.07, Was #9
Right Lane: Jeff Craig No Time, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.271/218.37, Was #14
Townsend has a 1.02 sixty foot number and picks up a nickel. Craig made the burnout and does not pull forward. Don't know what happened but they pushed the car off the track and on to the return road.
Left Lane: Fred Hagen Runs 5.840/250.78, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.024/247.11, Was #10
Right Lane: Marc White Runs 5.805/252.85, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.896/251.86, Was #6
Hagen pedaled the car at around 60 feet but moves into the top half of the field. White picks up a tenth and two spots in the qualifying order.
Left Lane: Steve Addleman No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.298/194.63, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.716/252.14, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.691/252.05, Was #1
Bartone does not improve but does show that he can be consistent. Addleman made the burnout but when he got back to the starting line he was given the 'shut off' sign from his crew. Again, we could not see what the problem was.
Left Lane: Pat Austin Runs 5.780/250.97, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.833/250.46, Was #5
Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 6.024/243.37, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.066/239.19, Was #11
Austin passes Newberry on this attempt and winds up in the three spot. Martin had a 1.02 sixty foot number and a small improvement at the finish. He remains in the eleventh qualifying position.
Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.726/254.66, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.856/251.86, Was #7
Manzo parlays a 1.000 sixty footer into a second qualifying position. That was as pretty a run as I've seen in the session. Bartone and Fritts continue to bookend the field.
Left Lane: John Patton Runs 6.013/241.37, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.191/237.17, Was #13
Another 1.000 turns out to be good for a 6.01. Again, the Patton car seemed soft. That concludes the Friday sessions for Federal-Mogul Funnycar. Next up are the Dragsters.
