Darrell Russell Succumbs to Injuries

Darrell Russell, 35, of Hockley, Texas, died Sunday night from injuries suffered during a racing
accident. The accident came during the second round of eliminations at the Eighth annual NHRA
Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway, Madison, Ill., immediately after he
was clocked at 322 mph at the finish line. Russell was driving a Top Fuel dragster owned by Joe
Amato and was the #1 qualifier for the Gateway event.
Amato selected Russell as his successor after retiring at the end of the 2000 season based on
Russell's accomplishments driving a Top Alcohol Dragster in NHRA`Division 4 competition,
including three Division 4 championships (1994,1996 and 1998) and a win at the U.S. nationals in
1997. Russell responded by becoming only the third driver to win in his first professional
start, in Pomona, Calif. Russell went on to win again in 2001, making seven final round
appearances during his rookie season, earning the NHRA Rookie of the Year award. He added three
more wins to his total during the 2002 season and posted his first #1 qualifying position at the
end of his second year. Russell made three final round appearances during the 2003 season, but
added no wins.
Russell's career appeared to be on an upswing after winning two weeks ago, at Columbus, Ohio,
and advancing to the semifinals last weekend, in Englishtown, N.J. He is survived by his wife,
Julie.
