DALLAS - Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the 16th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:


Left Lane: Vinny Arcadi Runs 5.074/302.52, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.330/293.06, Now #2

3:15 PM Arcadi was moving around all the way through the run but hung on for a decent pass.

Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 6.769/12.88, Now #4
Right Lane: John Lawson Runs 5.041/301.81, Now #1

Creasy gets about 300 feet out and strikes the tires. Lawson keeps it in the groove for a decent run.

Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 7.857/106.64, Now #6
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.987/154.26, Now #4

Hofmann gets about 300 feet and smokes the tires. Toliver gets a little past half track, breaks the tires loose and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.954/281.25, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #8

Gray gets about 1000 feet out and pops the burst panel off the car. Gilbertson was staged but the tree malfunctioned and he was forced to shut down.

Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 7.636/113.10, Now #7
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 9.118/97.99, Now #9

Epler gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Cannon makes it a little further, breaks the tires loose and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 8.696/99.52, Now #9
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 8.768/97.16, Now #10

Same story, different cars. Both drivers go up in smoke about 200 feet out and have to back off.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 10.408/81.90, Now #13
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.971/306.85, Now #2

Pedregon doesn't have any problems, right down the groove and gets in the second spot for now. Johnson gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke.

Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 5.977/165.22, Now #6
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 9.412/70.09, Now #14

Pedregon gets out about 300 feet, breaks the tires loose and has to shut down. Sarver lost traction about 300 feet out, pedaled, but still couldn't get the slicks to grab.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 8.853/93.52, Now #14
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.973/311.31, Now #3

Capps gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Worsham manages to keep the tires stuck and makes a good pass to get in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 9.641/92.02, Now #18
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.914/317.23, Now #1

These two left together and were even at the sixty foot mark, each with a .918 time, but Bazemore went up in smoke soon after and had to abort the run. Force makes the quickest pass of the session and takes the number one spot.
