Moore got the holeshot but the Canadian ECW car gets the win light. Margin of victory = 0.015 seconds (approximately 5 feet). After the run the track crew takes to the left lane, cleaning up some liquid on the launch pad and picking up some pieces from the rest of the lane. Spiering advances, but loses lane choice to Hood in round two.

Brinsfield did all he could do with a big holeshot, but his car let him down and Billes won easily.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  17 Chris Cline 6.563 210.37 Q 4 Steve Cossis 6.375 217.02

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  14 Tommy Gray 6.478 210.32 Q 3 Troy Critchley 6.362 212.81
                  0.447 6.800 185.75 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.550 6.366 223.49
Two very popular cars end up opposite each other here, the Undertaker and the Iron Horse. Gray won the tree, by a tenth of a second, but had to slow on the top end and Critchley finally gets a round win in 2000. He also gets lane choice against Pittman in round two.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  16 Shannon Jenkins 6.551 218.39 Q 1 Fred Hahn 6.179 226.87
                  0.455 8.719 10.03 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.493 6.292 223.65
The #1 and #2 number plates from 1999 end up racing each other in round one - who'd a thunk it? It was thrilling, both cars drifting toward the centerline and almost kissing fenders. Jenkins lifted. Hahn stayed on the throttle, turned hard right, and continued with another awesome run, also winning lane choice against Wasko in the quarterfinals.
